    Author's Preface

"This book is respectfully dedicated to all the brave men on both sides who fought for what they believed in during the war in the Far West, 1861-1865--especially the nearly forgotten Hispanic soldiers: men who served the Union forces such as the New Mexico volunteers under Lt. Col. Manuel Chaves and those who served the south such as the irregular Confederate cavalry of Col. Santos Benavides.  They experienced the tragedy of the American Civil War firsthand, struggling in battle to help forge the nation we have today.  The often-ingnored Hispanic heroes of the War Between the States should not be forgotten.  They are a part of America's heroic heritage."
