"Whose Stick Is This?", 128 x 147 cm oil on canvas, 2001.
The switching of presidential position on July 2001 in Indonesia was triggered by a conflict created by the former president regarding who should head the police force. Whereas the former president has appointed a new person but not agreed by the parliament. So it leads to some kind of competition about who should hold the stick of command. Yet it has been solved by the changing of the president, with no hard feelings.

Among the "behind the scene" of the making of the above painting, there was a story related to Carly Fiorina, HP computer CEO. When I made the sketch about Rahma for this painting, I was using Rahma's picture showing her teeth based on this photo. The next day, a picture of Carly Fiorina appeared in the newspaper like she was being angry. As if Carly was trying to say: "Rara, you don't have to fool around about his teeth, because he has written a letter to his friend at the Amex, Rina, explaining such teeth. And my name also contains Rina too."

"A HOPE FOR UNITED" 51 x 75 cm oil on canvas 2001
This is the first painting about Rahma, made on around February 2001. She was surrounded by a huge ring along with the eagle. After it was nearly finished, there was a news about The Corrs plan of "In Blue" tour in South East Asia including Indonesia. But then it was postponed due to Andrea Corrs sickness.
Is there any connection between that ring in this painting and the movie released at the end of 2001 "the Lord of the Rings"? Well, the letters in the ring looks like the ancient Javanese letters, while Rahma also came from East Java.

"SUNBATHING THE WEATHER" 51 x 71 cm oil on canvas 2001
This painting was made around September 2001, a few months after Rahma was married with a police officer. Indonesian police wear brown outfit, so the above brown eagle like representing the police. And the ring from the left painting has been broken into some flowers in this painting. On early October when this painting was nearly finished, The Corrs visited Indonesia.
During APEC meeting at Shanghai, when this painting was nearly completed, the APEC leaders wearing traditional chinese costum with circles on it, just like the flowers in this painting.

In the Year 2001 - 44th Annual GRAMMY Awards, U2 has become the winner for Record Of The Year, Best Pop Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocal, Best Rock Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocal, and Best Rock Album. While this "A Hope for United" painting seems to resembled that moment earlier, whereas the two heads, the head of the eagle and Rahma's head is inside the ring that shapes like a letter "U", like U2. |
