Title: Adventures in
Babysitting (AU fanfic) Classification: R (H/Mac(; R (JB/other) Disclaimer: Well duh I don't own them, only the character of JB and any other AU characters belong to the people who made them up. No profit is being made and I am a poor college student so you can only sue me for my loan promissory notes and that would only help me because then you would have to pay them back. :p Summary: Harm finds out one of his buddies closely kept secrets. Just a warning this is not really a Harm and Mac story, although they are in it. AN: I made the kid’s different ages, so that they fit in the story a little better. JB McCaye’s Apartment JB sat curled up in the corner of her couch listening with a smile to the person on the other end of the line. After she had arrived home and changed out of her Navy uniform, she always put on one of 'his' sweatshirts (that is if he was not around to join her at home). <Just a second 'J' there is someone on the other line.> the voice said in her ear <don't worry I will get rid of them> She just smiled in response even though he could not see her. She started playing with her long, dark brown hair, that no matter what she did with it always had curl in it. Generally, by the end of the day, strands were falling out all over the place, so she had gotten used to having a brush and mirror in her desk. Lately, being a lawyer was getting harder and harder. Her partner, well he actually was more then that. He was her cousin's husband, not to mention cute. Mac would kill her if she knew that about JB. Harm was a great partner, though. He never thought any ideas of hers were too farfetched. At least not out loud. <'J' I'm back. That was Harm. Seems their babysitter got really sick and can't make it tonight and he was trying to rope me into doing it for them.> he laughed. "Well, at least you got out of…" just then her call waiting beeped. "Just a second, Hon"..."Hello?" "Jessica, you're there. This is great I was so worried that you would be on a date or something. Anyway can you baby-sit tonight? You don't have plans, do you? Even Jack had plans tonight, seems he is meeting his mystery girlfriend, gee, he won't even tell me her name. Anyway, can you be here in half an hour. Mac and I have reservations?" Harm rushed headlong into his tirade without giving her a chance to respond. "Harm...well, I guess I can do it for you. It is your anniversary after all." "You're an Angel, JB. See you in a few. Bye" "Bye." She clicked back over to the other line, "I guess he just roped me into sitting for them tonight." <But we had plans.> the voice pouted. "I know, but it is their anniversary." she said reproachfully. "Hey, I have an idea." <What?> "Why don’t you come over tonight as well. There are five of those little hooligans. And after they go to bed..." she left it there. <Don’t go there 'J', they're my best friend's kids and...> "Well, they will be asleep, and besides nothing would happen, right. We promised." <Don’t remind me, it is that promise is the hardest to keep that I ever made.> "Come on, you know how, to get around that." she taunted. <Now, come on, we already discussed this.> "Well, I really need to get going. Please come by later." She said. <I will think about it.> "I love you."” <I love you too, 'J'> She smiled as she hung up the phone. Then she looked at the clock and jumped up to grab her purse and keys and ran out the door. Rabb Residence Mac was rushing around, trying to get ready for her date with her husband. While her youngest daughter Jackie was starting to get sick and she was very clingy to her mother. [AN: Sorry if the kids are in the wrong order] There was a knock at the door. "Harm, can you get that? It is probably JB." "Sure, Sarah." He moved to get the door, when Bella came and interrupted the movement. "I'll get it, Daddy." she ran to the door. "Aunt Jess, can we have ice cream tonight?" "Well, I guess that is up to your parents, now, isn’t it." Just then Mac came down the stairs carrying Jackie. "Jess, here." she said handing over the 2-year-old, "Now, I think she is coming down with something, so here is the number of the pediatrician, just in case she gets worse." "Get out of here, you two. It's your anniversary, go have fun. It is not like I have never taken care of these monsters before. Come on, I am a big girl. I even passed the bar on my first try." "Speaking of big, where did you get that sweatshirt? I don’t remember you ever having attended the Academy." Harm said as he noticed JB’s attire. "What? I can't support the Academy if I feel like it?" "Sure, but just remember that you never went there." "Get out of here, Harm!" she said smiling. The couple left feeling secure that their brood would be safe for the night. Rabb Residence "'K' kids time for bed." Jess said from the couch where the kids were all in various stages of falling asleep. All except Gabby. "But, Aunt Jess, Mom and Dad never make me go to bed this early." Gabby complained. "Well, it is a school night so get your six in gear and into bed. And don't forget to brush your teeth." she called after the retreating mass. Fifteen minutes later she was upstairs tucking the last of the girls into bed. "Goodnight, Gabby, Kris, Anne, Bella." She said from the hall so all of the girls could hear her. Then she walked into the master bedroom where little Jackie was laying on her parents' bed. "How you feeling, Sweetie?" "I want my mommy!" she was obviously not feeling well. "Here take this, it will help you go to sleep and when you wake up your Mommy and Daddy will be here." "I don’t like that it’s yucky." "I know but it will help you feel better." After much coaxing she finally got the little girl to take the medicine. She walked down stairs and dropped wearily on the couch. It had been a long 2 hours. Just then there was a knock at the door. She sighed as she got up to see who was there. "Who is it?" she asked through a yawn. "Who do you think it is?" came the male voice on the other side. She threw open the door, "Jack!" she said as she threw her arms around his neck. He bent down and kissed her. "Now, aren’t you sorry that you decided to do this instead of spend the evening with me?" "Just a little bit, but we can still spend some time together." she said smiling. She dragged him into the house and to the couch. "What kind of time were you thinking of?" he asked, sitting down and pulling her into his lap. "This kind." she said just before she kissed him. Rabb Residence JB and Jack were sitting on the couch quite enjoying themselves. And that is why they did not see 8 year old Gabby sitting on the stairs enjoying the show. She couldn't hide the giggle. "Gabby, go back to bed right now." Jess said after she heard the laughter. "Oh, man, I never get to have any fun. But Daddy is going to hear about this. 'Night Aunt Jess, Uncle Keeter." "Gabrielle, get to bed right now and if you tell your father I won't give you your birthday present next month." "Blackmail." "Yup. Now go to bed." "Alright, alright." Both adults watched as the girl went off to her bed. "Now where were we?" Jack asked as he pulled her back to his chest. "Don’t get toooo content there, remember that promise?" "I know, I know." he said before he kissed her again. Again they were completely involved in each other that they did not hear the front door open and close. "Harm, you go and find Jess, I am going up to check on the girls." Sarah said in a near whisper to her husband before she headed for the stairs, never once looking into the living room where her cousin was. Harm walked into the living room and came up short. There were two people on the couch when he expected to find only one. And the other occupant surprised him. He cleared his throat. Nothing. "Hey, Jack, what is going on here?" Harm said trying to act outraged. "What?" Keeter said a little dazed. "Harm, what are you doing here?" JB asked. "I live here." He answered. "Oh, yeah, well, I guess we will be going now." she said overly cheerful. "Hold up. How long has this been going on?" "What?" she asked with fake innocence. "Jessica!" he said sternly. "Oh, alright. Since about a year ago now, wasn’t it, Sweetie?” "Yup, right after their last anniversary party." "That sounds about right. Now can we go, Harm?" She said picking up her jacket and purse. She grabbed Keeter's hand and was dragging him through the door before Harm could even think to stop them. Outside "Meet me at my place?" she asked as she got into her vehicle. "What do you think? Of course, I will be there." He replied. He got into his car and drove off in the opposite direction that she had went, driving in a circle before he headed for her apartment. JB’s Apartment "J," Jack whispered in her ear as she sat next to him on the couch. "Hmmm?" "Just thinking about the future." "Really?" "J, I want to spend my life with you. Jessica Brynn McCaye, will you marry me?" "Jack, are you serious?" "Completely." "Jack, I love you. Of course, I will marry you!" she said before she threw her arms around his neck and kissed him. After a few minutes, he pulled back and reached into his pocket and pulled out a box. "Here, let me give you this." "Oh my, Jack, that it is beautiful!" "Well, it should be it has been in the family for years. My great, great grandmother wore this and her son gave it to his wife and so on down the line until now I get to give it to you." There were tears in her eyes as she gave her hand to him to place the ring on her finger. "I stole your class ring for the size." He confessed. "Gee, I was wondering where I had misplaced that." She smiled. He bent down and kissed her again. "I better leave before I try and break that promise that I made to you." "What promise is that?" "The one about us waiting." "Oh, that one." "I love you, 'J', but I have to go now. I have a flight in the morning." "You will be careful, won’t you?" "I always am. Now more then ever." "I love you, Jack." she kissed him goodbye and then pushed him out the door. The End (for now) |
