Isn't he ADORABLE?!?!?!
A very frustrated Charlie in his new collar.  The collar is to keep him from biting at his injuries.  He is NOT a real happy camper right now.  He does NOT like the collar.  He gets so angry when he tries to clean his face because he can't get to it.
  Poor baby!!
Once home, he immediately dived into his food in his temporary home.  I am taking this as a good sign.  He was very happy to be home after spending a night at the vet's office.
Here's hoping he heals well and quickly.
Charlie's Dog Attack:  March 4, 2003
On March 5, while feeding, I noticed some blood on the right rear foot of one of my special babies, Lazy T's Charlie.  I thought at first, he had scraped his foot but when I went back and looked closer, to my horror I discovered terrible wounds.  His right thigh was covered with black, dried blood.   His foot had very clear puncture wounds.  I was just sick!  I took him into the house to keep him warm overnight in a hay filled carrier.
Lazy T's Charlie on a happier day.  You can just hear him saying
"Here I am, Look at ME!!"
After keeping him warm in the house Tuesday night, first thing Wednesday morning I called my vet.  Now, in over 13 years of raising and showing rabbits, I have NEVER taken a rabbit to a vet.  But I didn't hesitate with Charlie.  After a thorough exam, Dr. McCann and I discussed treatment options, including the possibility of amputation.  He was put to sleep using a light dose of Isoflurane then his wounds were debrided and cleaned.  Dr. McCann felt that the biggest wound was where a chunk had been taken out of Charlie's hip.  Since healing had already started, he decided  it would be safer to simply clean the area and leave the existing scab sealing the wound. He cleaned the puncture wounds which surrounded the hole and on Charlies foot and x-rayed his hip, thigh, and foot finding no broken bones.  Apparently the teeth went right between the bones of Charlie's foot.  Thank God for small miracles
These are Charlies worst wounds after shaving, debridment and cleaning.    Pretty aren't they?  After being shaved, you see the tooth marks more clearly around the main wound.  Charlie was given injectible Baytril and he will continue to get it for at least a week.  I also have to clean the area around the wounds daily with peroxide to help prevent infection.   Charlie is now living in the house until he heals.
