Manx - the tailless cat!

The Manx is a breed of cat known for it's taillessness but which may
also boast a full length tail or any length in between. Why this variation?
The Manx gene actually restricts the length of the spinal column, the tail representing
approximately one third the length of the spine. This mutation was first recorded on
the Isle of Man in the sixteenth century, where sailing ships from many countries
docked over a coarse of several hundred years. Some believe the original mutated
cat to have stemmed from the British Shorthair cats. In actuality, because cats
were so commonly kept on ships for rodent control and companionship,
the original tailless cat could have been almost any domestic cat that might
have "visited" the Isle of Man. Today's Manx are direct descendants of these
Isle of Man cats. Careful breeding over the years has preserved and
enhanced this breeds unique characteristics.

The personality of the Manx has often been compared to that of a dog.
These cats attach themselves to their human family, often claiming one individual
over the others as their special friend. Generally not loud cats, quiet chirps,
trills or purrs, and gentle head bumps are their preferred methods of communication.
A thick, plush, double coat is another quality unique to the Manx. Upon close examination,
the shorthaired Manx will have a coat consisting of somewhat hard guard or
top hairs combined with a dense, soft undercoat. This gives the cat a well-padded feel and
provided superior protection against the elements in his feral state.

These two girls have a British Shorthair mum and a Manx dad.
From here on they and their offsprings will only be mated to Manx.
The goal is to get a full Manx pedigree.
The reason why I do breed Manx to BSH from time to time is to get
a bigger and more cobby Manx which is prefered by the standard.
All girls from the same combination are big and have a very nice double coat,
round head with good profile, high back legs and they really like to
enter the showbench.
