The first garment put on by the Victorian lady of the 1850's was the chemise which is a shapeless undergarment which reached just beneath the knees. It had a draw~string neckline and a back button closure. It was open legged for convenience. It was calf length with embroidered hems.
The second garment put on was the corset which was introduced in the 1840's. It was made of black lace. It closed in the front.
The next garment was the under petticoat. It was quite plain and they were worn as many as 6 at a time depending on the season.
The next garment was the hoop petticoat which was introduced in the late 1850's. With the hoop petticoat there was no need to excessive layers of under petticoats. Only one under petticoat was needed with the hoop.
The next garment was the over petticoat. This is the final undergarment. It was often elaborately embroidered and worn over the layered petticoats or the hoop petticoat.
Finally the dress was put on next. It had a fan front bodice with a capped close fitting. It had long sleeves and it was cartridge pleated three flounced skirt. A proper lady was never seen in public without her bonnet and gloves. |
