Hesiod's Theogony Lines 411-452 |
And Asteria conceived and gave birth to Hekate, whom above all Zuse son of Kronos honoured; and he gave her splendid gifts, to have a share of the Earth and the barren Sea. She also received a hsare of the starry sky and is honoured most of all by the undying Gods. For to this day, if somewhere anyone upon the earth propitiates, offering good sacrifices according to custom, he calls upon Hekate, And great honour follows very easily for the one who prayers the Goddess accepts favourable; and good fortune she adds, since the power certainly is with her. Those who were born of Gaia and Ouranos and were allotted honour, with all of these she hold her share. The son of Kronos did not force nor take away anything from her, of what she held among the forner Titan gods; thus she holds privilege in Earth and Sky and Sea, as the division was at the first from the beginning; and, although she is an only child, the Goddess has not received less than her share of honours, but much more still, since Zuse honours her. Whomever she favours, greatly she attends and aids; she sits by revered kings in judgement, and he, whom she favours, distinguishes himself among the people in assembly; and when men arm for mortal battle, then the Goddess attends, to readily bestow victory and hand glory to whom she favours. Good also is she when ever men compete in games, for there the Goddess attends and aids them; and winning by strength and courage, he easily and joyfully carries off the rich prize, and brings glory to his parents. And she is good, standing by horsemen, those whom she favours. And for those who work on the grey and stormy sea, and who pray to Hekate and the noisy Earth-shaker, easily the glorious Goddess grants a bountiful catch; and easily she takes away what is sighted, when she wills it. And she is good in the stables, with Hermes, to increase the stock; the heards of cattle and wide heards of goats and flocks of whoolly sheep, when willing in heart she increases from a few or makes less of the many. And in this way, while being the only child of her mother, among all of the ancient immortals she has been honoured. And the son of Kronos made her child's nurse, for all those who afterwards saw the light of all-seeing Dawn. Thus from the beginning she is child's nurse, and these are her honours. |
