A Action/Adventure - Genre stories featuring a plot with much physical movement [chases, shoot outs, hiking etc] Alternate Reality - Stories dealing with a plot that leads off from fandom Alternate Universe - Stories using characters from a fandom by giving the characters a whole new look and storyline, completely different from the actual fandom itself Angst - Describes an intense feeling of emotional strife; feeling of general discomfort or uneasiness Author's Notes - Either a page or a few paragraphs describing the author's reasonings behind creating a fic. It's also where you'll find any information dealing on created characters Avatar - Where the author inserts themselves into the story. See also Self Insert B Beast - Stories dealing with sexual relationships between humans and animals or usage of foreign objects in sexual tentions Bestiality - Often stories dealing with humans transforming into an animal but retains human thoughts and emotions and becomes sexually with animals Beta/Betareader - Deals with people proof reading a story prior to posting. In the real world it's known as an editor. The Betareader will check for mistakes and helps in making the story sound better. C Canon - Are characters that are established from a TV show, movie, book etc Challenge - Refers to ideas issued in a contest for other authors to get in on the fun. There's usually a special guidelines to follow Continuation - A story that continues on after the fandom ends but it doesn't break away from the creator's thoughts Crossover - Stories in which combines two or more fandoms into one [Gargoyles and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles share the same spot light] D Death Fic - Deals with stories that have a major or minor canon characters are killed Disclaimer - A few lines where an author will state ownership of characters and give credit to helpers. It's a helful hint to use so the creators won't feel offended. Can be found in the author's notes Drabble - Stories of no more than 100 words Drabblet - Stories up to 500 words, could be a poem F Family - A genre referring to stories in which evolves around a family Femslash - Refers to relationships between two females. It's also used to create new characters and that is commonly used with photo manipulations Feedback - Is when an author is rewarded for his or her efforts. I personally like to get feedback to know how I'm doing but I write for the fun of it, not to get feedback Flame - Comments sent out that are rude, and plain hateful. It also means constructive critisim Fluff - A story set with cuteness; very light on romance -- perhaps an innocent kiss or two G Genre - A catogory of topics a story will fall under [Drama, Romance etc] H Hentai - Japanese term to pervert Hurt/Comfort - Genre stories referring to an emotional or physical strain followed by physical comfort. Most stories will find more 'comfort' more than 'hurt' L Lemon - Refers to stories in which are heavy on graphical sexual situations Lime - Refers to sexual situations but are not too heavy M Mary Sue - A character with too many attributes that is not normal for a person. It is also an area where a character can become perfect or is perfect. Depends on which comes first O On Hold - Refers to the author informing that his/her story is not being updated for a while One Shot - Refers to stories as being only one chapter long. Also known as a short story or stand alone Original Character (OC) - Character that has no sustance to the fandom other than to the author's story. It's commonly used for new males and females Original Female Character (OFC) - Character that has no sustance to the fandom other than to the author's story. It's often used when the author wants to inform the readers of who the new character is Original Male Character (OMC) - Character that has no sustance to the fandom other than to the author's story. It's often used when the author wants to inform the readers of who the new character is Out of Character (OOC) - When a character is thrown right out of it's canon persona P Parody - Genre referring to stories to making fun of something Plot Bunny - Authors refer this as when they come up with new ideas for stories Point of View (POV) - Thoughts and feelings of one character R Role Play (RP) - Stories where the authors pretend to be the characters and they act out the scenes with other friends online S Self Insert - Refers to stories in which the author inserts their persona into the story Short Story - Usually stories being depict as a one chapter story with anything under 10,000 words or 50 KB. Also known as stand alone or one shot. For best results may want to try and do a story that's over 4,000 words, this way you get a good feel into the story Slash - Stories referring to homosexual relationship between characters. May not need to be in a sexual relation Spolier - Anything that can give away the story. It's mostly commonly used when a story is created during the show/movie if someone hadn't seen that particular spot, they could get a rude awakening Stand Alone - Refers to stories as being a story all on it's own and doesn't need to deal with any other stories if author so chooses T Two Shot - Refers to stories as being a short story but with two chapters/parts Three Shot - Refers to stories as being a short story but with three chapters/parts W Work in Progress (WIP) - Refers to the fact that it's not completed Writer's Block - When an author is stumped in their story and they can't think of what they want to get down Y Yaoi - Japanese term for homosexual for male Yuri - Japanese term for homosexual for female back |
