SONS OF UNION VETERANS OF THE CIVIL WAR

A Company currently contains 21 members from four of the six Camps in the Department of Kentucky.  It is named after a company which was in the 1st Capital Guards Regiment of Kentucky State Troops.  According to Speed's The Union Regiments of Kentucky, the Capital Guards Regiment was raised July 11, 1863.  It consisted of three battalions - one stationed in the neighborhood of Frankfort, one at or near Paducah, and one in the Sandy Valley.  The Frankfort Battalion protected the capital from the frequent incursions of guerilla forces.

* SUVCW NATIONAL ENCAMPMENT, AUGUST 17-20, LANSING, MICHIGAN.  AN SVR BREAKFAST IS ON THE SCHEDULE FOR SATURDAY MORNING.   UNIFORMS ARE TO BE WORN AT THE BREAKFAST.  UNIFORMS MAY BE WORN THROUGHOUT THE ENTIRE ENCAMPMENT.   CONTACT ME FOR DETAILS.

* CAMP WILDCAT REENACTMENT.  OCTOBER 20-22. THERE WILL BE AN SVR MEETING AT 4:00 ON SATURDAY.

* VETERANS DAY PARADE IN WILMORE.  VETERANS DAY SERVICE AT CAMP NELSON NATIONAL CEMETERY. WE WILL DO ONE OR BOTH OF THESE DEPENDING ON THE TIMING.  DETAILS LATER.

A COMPANY FUND RAISERS

In order to raise funds for the Company, I will be taking bids on three Civil War books, until  the Camp Wildcat reenactment October 4th.  The bidding will start at $10 for each book.  You can bid on any or all of the books.  All profits from the sale will go into the Company treasury.  Simply call, email, or see me to check the current high bids and to place your bid.  I will post the bids here as they change and in the Camp 5 newsletter.  The bidding will continue during the SVR meeting at the reenactment.  At the conclusion of the meeting, the books will be sold to the highest bidder.  You need not be present to receive your book, if you are the high bidder.

Mary Chestnut's Civil War, edited by C. Vann Woodward.  886 pages
Landscape Turned Red: The Battle of Antietam
, by Stephen W. Sears.  430 pages
The Life of Johnny Reb and The Life of Billy Yank, by Bell I. Wiley.  898 pages

Also, one of our Members has donated a black leather US revolver holster and a black leather US cap pouch.  Both items are of very high quality.  Chances for these two items are $1 each or six for $5.  Tickets will be sold at the Cythiana reenactment Sept. 23, the Perryville reenactment Oct. 7-8, and the Camp Wildcat reenactment Oct. 21.  Tickets can also be obtained from 1st Sgt. Downey.  The drawing for these two items will take place at the SVR Company meeting at Wildcat.
