What is the one key idea of this chapter?

The main idea about chapter one is that we are called into relationship with Jesus. The chapter talked a lot about The Covenant, old and new, focusing mainly on the similarities and differences between the two. In the Old Covenant, God made a promise with Abraham that his descendants would be as numerous as the stars in the night sky, and that God would give them beautiful land on which to live. The New Covenant was Jesus dying to save our sins. He saved his followers, and we celebrate this today through the Eucharist.

Write about two major ideas you want to remember. Write a short paragraph on each clearly stating the idea and then telling why you want to remember it.

The main piece of information that I would like to retain from this chapter is the life story of Sister Thea Bowman. I had never heard of her in the past, and judging by her story, think she is a wonderful person. She worked for the diocese of Jackson, Mississippi, traveling around giving presentations to encourage racial and cultural acceptance. If the world had more people like Sister Thea Bowman, there would be no prejudice left to speak of.

Another valuable thing that I learned in chapter one that I should apply to the rest of my life are the three levels of reading Scripture. They showed me how to properly pay attention and take a message from God in every Scripture reading. The stages, (know the story, what is God saying to us?, What is God saying to me?) all make sense and are solid instructions for better understanding of Scripture.

One significant question you have from this chapter. It can be intellectual or personal. Just write out the question.

I generally want to know more about Pentecost because I am relatively unsure about the topic and event or events that relate to it: “What exactly happened at Pentecost?”

What experiences in your freshman year brought you closer to Jesus? Explain.

My freshman year at SLUH ushered in a lot of change in my life. I see myself becoming a little bit different of a person every day, hopefully different for the better. The most important aspect of my life that has changed during my short tenure at SLUH is prayer. Previously, I didn’t spent much time praying, and thought it was nothing more than a waste of time. I suppose I was just “brainwashed” through grade school religion class. Now, I find myself praying as much as possible. Whether a two second prayer for safety before stepping onto the ice for a shift in a hockey game, or a twenty minute prayer asking for guidance in my life or giving thanks for the good things. I try to think of Jesus dying for us, and thank him for that in my prayers. I feel that I was inspired by my teachers at SLUH to pray more often, and I hope to see myself continue to be more and more of a Christian every day.
