The Day I Saw Jesus Walk on Water

By: Kevin Kickham

Jesus was off praying again. Lately, praying seemed like the only thing Jesus did. But I guess He had a good reason, with His cousin John being put to death by Herod just a couple of days before. Anyway, while Jesus was off on a mountain praying, me and the other eleven apostles were waiting out in the boat in which we had brought Jesus to His praying spot. Very soon, strong winds and thrashing waves drifted our boat very far offshore from where we were supposed to be waiting for Jesus. All twelve of us were trying very hard to get the boat back to shore when I saw one of the most altogether frightening and amazing sights I have ever seen. A figure was walking on the water was heading towards our boat. When I made out the strange figure to be Jesus, I was very scared, for I thought something had happened to the Son of God when we were away from Him and His ghost had come back to take vengeance on us because we left Him. However, Jesus’ words soon rang out in the strong winds with a powerful serenity, saying, “Take courage, it is I; do not be afraid.” Somehow, Jesus’ words always make me feel better, so in the middle of a raging typhoon, I soon felt comfortable and at peace with Jesus in our presence. Soon, Peter, who always seems to be pushing it a little too far, was telling Jesus that He would only believe that it was Him if Jesus made him also walk on water. Jesus made this happen, but Peter, doubting Jesus’ power, started to fall into the water. However, Jesus did not become upset, and calmly said that Peter should trust in Him. After we got out of the boat, the winds died down by some power of God. My experience on the boat was one of the most amazing experiences of my life, and it totally confirmed my trust in Jesus being the Son of God. Sure, I was scared at first, and that may have happened because of sin trying to work through me. However, I learned that Jesus can lead me away from this negative attitude and into His Kingdom of believers. I will never forget to trust in the works of God, no matter what risks I must take to live them out in my life. Even if I don’t always live correctly, now I know that I can always turn to Jesus for forgiveness.
