Journal #1

A) The key idea of Chapter 1 is to discover and build on our relationship with God by looking at its history with the People of God and its importance in our lives today. When reading about the covenants God made with Abraham and Moses many years ago, it becomes clear that Jesus is the greatest fulfillment God could have sent to us to hold up His end of the sacred vow. Even after Jesus leaves to join God in Heaven, God continues to inspire and encourage the apostles by sending His Holy Spirit to descend upon them. Today, it is our job as Catholic Christians to realize God’s loving presence in our life and use the courage He gives us to by doing things like realizing God’s presence in the world and doing service. These actions are ways that we can keep God’s covenant of love forever in our lives.

B) The first major idea I would like to remember from this chapter is the story of the descent of the Holy Spirit on Pentecost. I think that it is important to remember this story because it is a great example of the courage that God gives to us to do His will. The apostles were scared of what life would be like without Jesus right beside them. However, with the courage of the Holy Spirit, they were able to proclaim God’s message no matter what would happen to them because of it. I believe that this quality is crucial to my faith today.
The next major idea I would like to remember from this chapter is the writings of the famous Roman historian, Tacitus. Even though he was a prominent, pro-Roman official, he still realized the injustice of Nero’s mistreatment of Christians. Nero destroyed most of Rome with a fire in A.D. 64, but instead of taking the blame, he said it was the Christians’ fault and executed many of them. Tacitus saw how wrong this action was and wrote about the injustice, taking the side of the Christians even though he was Roman. This action shows that it is not impossible to break out of the norm to do what is right.

D) The Gospels of Matthew, Mark and Luke are considered synoptic, while the Gospel of John is considered to be different because of its focus on the divinity of Jesus. What is the main focus of the three synoptic Gospels?

E) The experience of my freshman year that brought me closer to Jesus wasn't some big, planned event like Direction Days or Freshman Retreat. Sure, those experiences were good to have, but I didn't really see myself grow in either event. This fact is probably true because I wasn't open to seeing God in others while participating in them, because I am usually a little introverted. However, being able to quiet down for two minutes every day for the Examen and thank God while contemplate His existance was probably the greatest source of my personal growth during the year. At the beginning of the year, I didn't really know what to do with my Examen, but by the end of the year, I had trouble fitting all I had to say to God into a two minute time period. Having time to do an Examen every day not only brought prayer back into my life, but also made my relationship with God much stronger.
