Too Late

~~*Chapter Seven*~~
“I can’t believe I’m going to
this.” AJ muttered to himself, stepping out of his car and placing his keys in
his inside jacket pocket. He straightened his suit and tie before walking into
the church. “Why would they pick this day to get married on?” AJ mumbled,
nodding to the priest at the entrance. It was December 24th.
Christmas Eve. What a day to get married on, AJ thought unhappily. He found
Kevin waiting with the other groomsmen. AJ walked through the door, taking a
deep breath preparing himself for what was to come.
“AJ!”
Nick rushed up to him, his bow tie unclasped. “Where have you been man? The
wedding’s gonna start in twenty minutes!” Nick wrapped his arm around AJ’s
shoulders and brought him to a girl he had never seen before. “Make sure he
looks alright.” Nick walked away nervously.
She
obviously didn’t tell him how I reacted to the news if he asked me to be a
groomsman. AJ thought as the girl fixed his hair and his bow tie. He
hadn’t seen Autumn since the day she told him the news, a week ago. Now he
waited anxiously to see her as he was led out to the entry hall where he was
paired up with one of Autumn’s sisters.
“Suzanne,”
she whispered in his ear. He nodded.
“AJ,”
He whispered back. Suzanne gasped. AJ looked at her and she quickly wiped the
surprised look from her face.
“I’m
sorry, it’s just that…well you’re her best friend right?” AJ nodded
slightly. “You two have been friends for over seven years and it’s the first
time that I’m ever meeting you.”
“Suzy,
Autumn’s losing it again.” Another bridesmaid hissed in Suzanne’s ear.
Suzanne gave AJ an apologetic look and walked away hurriedly, carrying her dress
in her hands so she could move faster. AJ talked to Kevin while he waited for
Suzanne to return.
AJ
heard the ruffling of Suzanne’s dress before he saw her. She had a worried
look on her face. She stared wide-eyed at AJ, then looked away nervously as
their cue began. The music.
AJ
strode down the aisle, Suzanne on his arm. It seemed like forever before the
other groomsmen and bridesmaids were lined up along the altar. And then came
Autumn’s music. AJ inhaled deeply, waiting to see what she looked like.
There
was no way to describe her except for perfection. Her beautiful wedding dress
seemed to be made especially for her. He gorgeous brown hair was done in
rippling curls that caressed her face beneath a lacy veil. Even through the
veil, AJ could see her eyes water as she came gracefully down the aisle,
escorted by her father. Her blue eyes were smiling in Nick’s direction, then
suddenly looked over and met his gaze. AJ’s heart skipped a beat and he seemed
to forget how to breathe. AJ couldn’t stop looking at her. He stared at her
all through the vows and the rest of the ceremony, until he heard the one little
part that he had been waiting to hear.
“Speak
now or forever hold your peace.” The priest was saying. AJ took a deep breath,
asking himself if he really wanted to do this to two of his best friends. He
did.
“I
do.” AJ wasn’t sure if the words had come from his own mouth, but he could
tell by gasp of the crowd and where their eyes were directed that he wasn’t
the one that had said it.
