Too Late

~~*Chapter Three*~~

“Can you believe that today is mine and Nick’s two week anniversary?” Autumn cried excitedly to AJ. He smiled and shook his head. “It is, and we’re gonna celebrate.” She smiled wickedly.

“And just how are you gonna celebrate, may I ask?” AJ asked, not really wanting to know the answer. He watched as Autumn moved closer on the couch next to him. She had her knees pulled up underneath her body and was crawling towards him. She sat on her legs and looked at AJ, her eyes confirming the information that he didn’t really want to know. “Don’t you think it’s a little too soon?”

“Oh, but AJ, he’s perfect! He’s everything I’ve ever wanted in a guy…except one thing, but that doesn’t matter.” AJ turned away from her and stared at the picture on top of the TV. “AJ, I think I love him.”

The silence that followed that statement seemed overwhelming, almost so loud that AJ wanted to cover his ears. He stared hard at the girl in the picture, desperately sending mental waves telling her that he loved her and not to do that with Nick.

“AJ, look at me.” He didn’t. “Say something.” A few more moments of silence followed. Suddenly, AJ felt Autumn’s cold, slim fingers touching either side of his face. Just the touch of her now sent chills running up and down his spine. She gently turned his face towards hers. “AJ, please tell me what you think.”

He looked into her worried eyes, eyes that told him that whatever he said would determine whether or not she would give all of herself to Nick that night. He fought a short inner battle before saying, “I’m happy that you found someone.” He forced a smile, hoping it seemed genuine.

“Thank you.” Autumn’s lips mouthed the words. She slid her arms around his neck and hugged him tightly. She moved away and shifted her legs out from underneath her body and stepped onto the floor. She silently gathered her things and headed for the door. Just before opening it, she turned back to AJ. He smiled. A smile spread over her own face and she left AJ’s house.

“Oh!” AJ cried after her heard her car engine start up. He buried his head in a pillow, knowing that he could have stopped the beautiful individual that he just realized he loved from walking out the door, and walking into a bedroom with Nick Carter. But all he truly wanted was for her to be happy. And if Nick made her happy, then so be it. He would sit back and watch as the one that he loved fell deeper in love with his friend.
