Sweet Kisses: Chapter 6

"So why did you just all of a sudden talk to me?" We had gotten ice cream from one of those 24-hour gas stations and we were walking through a park.
"Well," I started, gulping down the ice cream that was still in my mouth. "I realized that I didn't have too many friends that were ladies. Well, to be honest, I didn't have any. My ex-girlfriend was pretty much a bitch. She didn't want me within thirty feet of anyone that had breasts. So when I saw you guys standing there by the coffee machine, I thought I'd make a few friends, but as it turns out, it took me two weeks to make one!" She laughed, slipping the spoon into her mouth, taking in the last of her ice cream. I offered her mine, but she wouldn't take it.
"I'm so worn out!" I collapsed onto a nearby bench and waited for Lizzy to join me. When she didn't I reached up for her hand, but she pulled away from me, crossing her arms across her chest, the ice cream cup still clenched in her hand. "What's wrong?"
"I don't know. I just don't know if I want to completely trust you yet." She was looking over my head as she stood in front of me.
"Why shouldn't you?" I asked her.
"Well, it took you three years to finally say, 'hi' and then you want me to just jump into this friendship? I just don't know." She looked me in the eye now. "I'm sorry." She whispered.
"No, it's okay. I see where you're coming from."
"You do?" Her voice sounded hopeful.
"Sure," I said, hoping that maybe I wouldn't have to explain. I had no idea why she wouldn't just sit down. When I didn't say anything else, she looked at me, her eyebrows coming nearly to a point, then shrugged and sat next to me.
I grabbed her ice cream cup and took it to the trash. I sat back down next to her, closer this time. If she noticed my intentions, she didn't show it.
"You know, I know a lot about you, but I don't know your last name yet."
"Garcia."
"Sounds Spanish."
"It is. My dad's Spanish and my mom is Swedish or something. That's why I have these blue eyes and dark hair. You don't see that too often, do you?" I shook my head, not knowing what to say next.
We sat in silence for a little bit. It was a little uncomfortable, but I didn't know how to break the ice. I looked at her; she was staring up into the sky, gazing at the stars. I just sat marveling at how I could ignore such a beautiful girl for three years.
She turned towards me slowly, sensing that I was staring at her. "What?"
"Well, I was just wondering how I could have ignored you for three years. You're gorgeous." My eyes moved down to her lips and I realized just how much I wanted to kiss her. "Elizabeth…" I couldn't say anything. I guessed that she knew what I wanted. I leaned my face in towards hers, making slow, cautious movements. I didn't know how she would react. I tilted my head slightly when I neared her lips. Just before making contact, I hesitated, breathing lightly on her lips, then closed my mouth around hers. It didn't last long. I didn't expect it to, since it was the first kiss between us.
"Um, Nick…" her voice trailed off. I didn't know what she was about to say. I waited for her to finish. She opened her mouth to say something, then shut it. Then opened it again, then shut it. I waited, not knowing whether to expect the worst or hope for the best.
I was surprised when she leaned in towards me, her lips connecting with mine, this time lingering longer. When the first one ended, another one started. But it ended after about three soft kisses. Sweet kisses.
She moved away from me, seeming unsure of herself. I smiled at her, grabbed her hand and led her out of the park and back to the hotel where the group, the band, and the crew were staying.
When we reached her room that she was sharing with two other girls from the crew, she hesitated before getting out her key.
"Nick, thanks for taking me out tonight." She looked a little flustered, self-conscious even.
"Look, Lizzy," I grabbed both of her hands and held them in mine. "You don't have to act all shy around me now. What happened to the feisty Lizzy that I met that first day in rehearsal?"
"She's too shy to come out right now. She hasn't been out with a guy in three years, go figure."
"Is three your lucky number?" We both laughed and she seemed to ease up. "Don't worry about anything, alright? If this works out, that's great, it's more than great. But if you don't want it to work out, just tell me and I'll back off."
"It's just going so fast!" She shook her head gently. "I mean, at the beginning of the day, we were barely friends and now we're…."
"What are we?" I stepped in closer to her. "Tell me what we are."
"Well, we're…we're…dating." She whispered the word so quietly I had to lean towards her to hear it.
"So is it alright if I give you a good night kiss?" She nodded slowly, then tilted her face towards mine, meeting my lips and kissing them softly.
"Good-night." She waved shyly, opened the hotel door and slipped in quietly.
When the door had shut, I pumped my arm in the air and made my way happily to my room.
