If
You Knew What I Knew:
Chapter 7
AJ
“AJ! AJ!” Brian burst into my
dressing room, breathless and pale as a sheet.
He was holding onto the doorknob, bent over as if he were gonna throw up.
“What man?” I was kind of pissed that he decided to
interrupt me. “Can you come back,
man? I’m sort of in the middle of
something!” I gestured to my girlfriend, Amanda.
“No! You
don’t understand!” Brian just stared at me.
“What is it Brock?” I was exasperated.
“A shoe...there was a shoe...”
“Bri, we all wear shoes.
What’s the problem?” I pulled my shirt back on and moved toward the
door.
“I...there was a shoe...hit me...shoe...in the air...”
Brian didn’t look so good anymore. And
what he said about a shoe in the air kind of interested me.
“Okay, maybe it’ll be better if you just show me,” I
turned back towards Amanda. “I’ll
be right back, baby. I promise.”
I gave her a quick kiss and then shut the door behind me.
Brian didn’t say anything to me so I didn’t either.
I just followed him and wondered what this whole thing was about.
“You know, I had a perfectly good make-out session going on
in there. This better be
important.”
“It’s definitely important!” Brian finally put a whole
sentence together.
I followed him into his dressing room.
It was pitch black.
“You turn on the lights and tell me what you see.” Brian
stared at me through the biggest eyes. I
could tell that he wasn’t faking. “I
haven’t seen it yet, so just don’t say anything unless it’s something
stupid. Let me tell you all that I know.” I turned toward him. “I
was about to take a nap when a shoe hit me in the back of the head.”
“What?” I didn’t get it.
“Just turn on the lights.
I’ll be out here.”
Brian leaned against the wall next to the door and closed his
eyes. I could tell that he really
didn’t want to see whatever was in his room.
“You’re not afraid of the boogie man are you, B-Rok?” I
punched him softly in the arm, but the look on Brian’s face told me that this
was more than scary-movie jitters.
I stepped into the doorway and took a deep breath.
Whatever was in the room was about to be discovered.
I flipped the light switch without thinking twice.
Then I wish I hadn’t.
“He didn’t wait. He
didn’t wait.”
