If You Knew What I Knew:
Chapter 17

Howie

I had gotten AJ’s message the night before.  I was actually in the room but I let my cell phone ring because I didn’t want to talk to him right then.  I didn’t want to talk to anybody.  They just didn’t understand how this thing with Nick was hurting me.
I didn’t do it.  As much as everybody thought I did, I didn’t!  I wouldn’t!  Yeah, I had made plans with AJ, sure, sure.  That doesn’t mean that I actually went through with it!  I loved Nicky just as much as the rest of them did.  They just didn’t understand that now.
It hurt me to think that my best friends in the whole world could think something like that about me.  They were my brothers!  Closer than brothers!
I couldn’t take living like this any longer!  First Caroline died, then Polly, then Nick gets murdered and my best friends think that I did it!  This world is corrupted!
It was six in the morning, when I was supposed to meet with AJ and the other guys.  I just really didn’t want to have to deal with them right now.  I laid on my bed, dressed and ready to meet with the guys, but I wasn’t ready mentally.  I still had to feel stable enough to talk things through.  I had to make them see my point.
I was prepping myself for all their hard, evil stares and cruel questions when the hotel room phone rang.  I looked at the clock.  It was six ten.
I picked up the phone and without saying hello I said, “Yeah, I know I’m late, but I’m on my way.”
“Howie.” Was all the person said.
    “Hello?”
    “I’m here.”
“What?  Who is this?” I had thought it was one of the guys calling to ask where I was.
“You know exactly who it is.  If you’re smart, you’ll meet me in the park, by the lake where Polly Anna drowned.”
    “Who is this?”
“Seven o’clock.  That gives you a little less than an hour.”
“Please, just tell me who you are!”
The caller at the other end let out a cackle of a laugh.  “If you knew what I knew!  If you only knew!”
    The line went dead.
