~~*Chapter Seven*~~

“Reservations for Carter,” Nick said to a man in an important looking black suit, we were standing just inside huge glass doors.

“Yes, right this way,” the man replied leading the way past candle-lit tables, “Our finest table, sir. Enjoy your meal.” Nick pulled out my chair and I smoothed my long black silk dress as I sat down. I had pulled my shoulder length blonde hair into a curly pony-tail. Nick looked sexy as ever in a very sleek black suit.

“You take my breath away,” He whispered into my ear as he sat down across from me. He took my hand in his and I couldn’t take my eyes off him. Nick ordered for us and we had wine while we waited.

“Can I have my surprise now?” I asked, suddenly remembering.

“Not yet. As soon as we eat though.” Just as the words left his lips the waiter sat our dinner on the table. Soon we were finished and waiting for dessert.

“I need to go the restroom. I’ll be right back,” Nick said, standing.

“Hurry,” I said, “I’m still waiting for my surprise.” I smiled and watched him walk towards the bathroom, stop and walk right past it. My smile faded as he quickly made his way to a side exit and slipped outside.

“What’s going on” I mumbled under my breath, slowly standing up. I glanced around and then made my way to the door. I peeked outside the door just in time to see Nick slide into his car. Confused, I slowly crept outside and knelt behind a row of cars a few feet away, but directly behind Nick’s car. Through the back window I could see two shadowy figures, and from the outline of the one in the passengers seat I knew it was a woman.

“What the hell does he think he’s doing?” I grumbled to myself as I saw the two figures lean towards each other. She turned her head slightly and I could tell they were kissing. It seemed like hours before they finally broke apart. My chest felt as though someone had ripped out my heart. Then I felt my face get red and my hands clench into fists. How could he do this? I asked myself. I won’t cry, he’s not worth it. I stood up straight and marched towards the car just as Nick’s door flew open and he stepped out.

“Courtney? What are you doing out here?” Nick asked with a stunned statement. I opened my mouth to ask him the same question, but before I could utter a word the passenger door swung open. The woman turned around quickly. My breath caught in my throat.

“Tommi? What the fuck do you think you’re doing?” I screamed, feeling the tears well up in my throat. Tears of anger. Tears of hurt.

“Nothing,” She replied weakly, glancing toward Nick.

“Nothing my ass! You’re trying to screw me over! What, did you think I wouldn’t find out? We’re staying in the same house! You’re fucking bold!! Who do you think you are?” I took a step closer, the tears I had been fighting were now streaming down my face.

“Look, baby, it’s not what you think,” Nick said reaching out for my hand.

“Don’t you ever touch me again you bastard!” I jerked my hand away, “and don’t you ever call me baby.”

“Please just calm down and let us explain,” Tommi pleaded.

“No. I don’t wanna hear it,” I brushed some tears away. “Tommi, I thought you were my friend? We’ve been through so much together. But hey, it’s not totally your fault. I mean, what girl wouldn’t take him up on an offer. But you, Nick. I though you loved me,” I choked through my tears, “I was wrong. Why did I believe you?! God I’m so stupid to believe that you loved me and only wanted me when you had thousands of girls throwing themselves at you!! Have you been sleeping with every other girl you meet? Or just my friends?” I turned and began to walk away, when I heard Nick speak.

“No. You’re wrong,” He said through clenched teeth. “I don’t want anybody else. I would never hurt you. I love you.”

“Bull shit!” I screamed, stopping to turn and look at him. “I’m sick of your fuckin’ lies!! Was this my surprise?!” I asked.

“Here’s you stupid surprise!!” He roared throwing something in my direction. A small, black velvet box rolled to a stop at my feet. My heart skipped a beat as I bent to pick it up. I gently pulled it open and a fresh set of tears spilled down my face. The engagement ring sparkled in the moonlight. My breath caught in my throat. What have I done?! My body shuddered as I began to weep uncontrollably. I hurriedly closed the box, and let it slip through my fingers. I turned on my heals, tears streaming blurring my vision, and ran like hell.
