Justin kissed Emily oustide her doorstep and said goodnight. She walked inside her house and sighed happily. "So you took the car out for a ride?" her father said from the living room. "Yes dad." She sighed "can't get anything past me." He said sternly "I'm sorry." She sighed "So how'd it ride?" he asked with a big grin. "Ugh great. The cooler system worked well with the boosters, but didn't cool down the breaking system fast enough." She frowned "We'll work on that." He smiled "I'm gonna head to bed." She smiled kissing his cheek. She walked up the stairs and threw herself into the bed. The next morning her father shook her out of bed and told her to get into her work clothes. She came down the stairs with a bandana on her head and in overalls. She grabbed some toast. Her grandmother detested that she sat down and eat but she ignored it and walked out to the garage. Her father was underneath the car already. "Whachya doin?" She asked bending down and looking underneath the car "Changing the oil. Maybe it has to do with the oil." he said "Nope I changed that last week." She smiled "I dunno then wise girl." he said sliding out from underneath the car. he threw an oil rag up into her face. She took it off and had oil smudged onher face. "dad!" She wined "Oh come on you used to love getting dirty>" he laughed "yeah that was when I was a tomboy." "Oh so my tomboy is all grown up and now she's a lady!" he said waving his hands "Dad it's not like that." She wined "Alright, are you gonna help me or what?" he asked handing her a wrench. She smiled at him and bent down on her knees. She laid her back flat on the sliding board and slid underneath the car. She twisted a few scres making sure everything is tight. "I don't get it. Nothing seems wrong." She said. There was no answer. "hello! Dad!" She yelled dropping the wrench. She shook her head and slid out from under the car. There over her was Justin with a huge smile. She sat up and wiped her hands off on her overalls. "Oh hey. i didn't knwo you were coming by." She said standing up. "yeah well neither did I. I was passing by and I saw you in the garage under the car." He smiled "Oh yeah I'm working on it." "What's wrong?" he asked "The cooling system isnt working up to it's potential." She said "May I?" He asked pointing to the hood "Sure. I doubt it will do any good." She said as he popped open the hood. He looked underneath and sighed. "What?" She asked He leaned her forward to look at the contents under the hood. "You forgot to fill the antifreeze. I bet your coolers use that." He said "Damnit!" She said "it's okay. You were looking for the big things." he laughed "So did you find out what's wrong with her?" her father asked walking over cleaning his hands. "Antifreeze." She sighed. "Hey Justin, come to help out." Paul smiled "Actually no. I gave her the answer to your problem though. Taking all the credit Emily." Justin smild at her. "Oh shut up." She said turning back to the car. "So what's up?" Paul asked "Well I was just passing by. I have to go though. Mom wants me to meet her at church and I have exactly five minutes to get there." he said looking down at his watch. "arlight." Emily said turning back to him. Justin leaned to kiss her cheek and then pulled back. "What?" She said looking at him. "You have oil smudged on you face." he smiled "ugh! Go to church!" She cried. "I'll call you tonight." he said walking away laughing. "Good kid." her father said "How do you know that?" She asked "he goes to church." he smiled "So." She laughed "We don't." her father laughed "yeah we don't." She said joining him in laughter "We should though." He said turning to fill the antifreeze. "You're kidding right?" She asked in shock. "yeah of course." he said laughing. "Had me scared there. Thought you were an imposter." she laughed "Do me a favor check on your grandmother. She was cooking a storm in there and you know her she always leaves the gas on." her father said Emily wiped her hands off on her overalls and headed into the house. She walked over to the kitchen and could smell the gas. She quickly shut off the stove. She opened the windows and aired out the kitchen. Her grandmother was sitting in the living room watching Family Feud. "Ehh Emily darling>" her grandmother said "yes grams?" She asked sitting down next to her. "We should go on that show one day." her grandmother said taking her hand. "But we don't have a big enough family." Emily said "yeah ever since your mother." "My mother what?" Emily asked "I'm not supposed to tell you but your mother isn't dead. She isn't dead at all." "I knew it!" emily cried "You're father told me to keep it secret. You see your mother ran away with another man when you were two years old. your father was heart broken." "Do you know where she is?" emily asked "yes, but I don't remember where I put the address." "Grandma you have to remember!" "I'll find it by the end of the day." her grandmother said feebly. "Thank you grandma." "Anything for you sugar." her grandmother said pinching her chek |
