Taken For Granted
Chapter Eighteen
"Okay Lola, let's have some fun." I smiled pulling her toward the dance floor.
"See you're enjoying yourself already." She laughed
"Yeah I guess I am. Thanks for bringing me here." I yeled over the loud music
"Anytime." she smiled
We danced a little before returning to the bar.
"Oh hey check those guys out." Lola pointed over to a pair of gorgeous looking guys.
I picked up my drink and put it to my mouth. I couldn't remember what it was that I had ordered. I had had quite a few already and now my memory was blurred.
"Let's go over and talk." She said grabbing my hand. She tugged me forward toward them.
"Hey." She smiled approaching them.
"Hey." The brunette replied
"I'm Lola and this is my friend Corinn." She said
"I'm Paul and this is Steve." he replied pointing to his friend who had dark black hair and blue green eyes.
"Well Paul I was wondering, would you like to dance?" She asked flirtatiously.
They took off to the dance floor and I leaned up against a high table.
"So Corinn, do you come to these places often?" he smiled
"not actually." I replied
"I thought so, so what's your boyfriend's name." He said with a laugh already knowing.
"he's not really my boyfriend."
"Love on the rocks huh?"
"Basically, I think I'm gonna kill it though."
"Why?"
"His bestfriend is my ex and well he doesn't know about our arrangement."
"And the plot thickens." He laughed
"But yeah so what's your girlfriend's name?" I asked
"She has none because I don't have one."
"Oh." I said leaning my forehead on the table.
"Are you drunk?" he laughed
"Quite a bit, if I don't say so myself." I laughed breathing hot air onto the wood surface.
"Why don't you let me take you home?" he asked with a smile
"Only if you promise to behave."
"Promise." he said putting his hand over his heart.
"Alright, let me tell Lola." I said trying to stand up.
"Don't bother I'll tell her, stay here I'll be back." he said dissapearing for a few minutes.
I thumbed my hands over a shot glass and thought about Josh. Steve came back and helped me out the door.
"Steve, why are you beeing so nice?" I asked in a daze as we sat in the taxi.
"Because I'm a nice guy, who falls for the wrong girls." he sighed yet smiled
"I hope it's not me because I'm the wrong kind of girl for anyone to fall for. I'm impossible!"
"I can see that." he laughed
I slumped over onto his shoulder.
"Alright we're here." He said nudging me to sit up.
"Okay!" I said lively. I fumbled my way out of the taxi. He walked me up to my apartment door and opened it for me.
"Well goodnight!" I said leaning up against the door.
"Take care." He said before walking down the hall.
"Hey Steve!" I yelled down the hall to him.
"yeah?" he said turning to look down the hall at me.
"Now that you know where I live, don't be a stranger." I said with a smile
"I'll be seeing you." He said winking back at me.
I closed the door and leaned against it. Just a friend. I'd keep this one as just a friend. That's what I was promising myself. Somehow I'd ruin it though. It would be like Josh. He was my friend before this whole thing started.
I collapsed on the bed that night and woke with a horrible hang over. I groped over toward the kitchen and fixed myself some orange juice. I gulped down the glass and then turned to the sink to throw it back up. I ran the water and rinsed my mouth.
"Blah!" I said grossed out. I made my way over to the bathroom when the phone began to ring. I ignored it wanting to take my shower. The machine picked up.
"Corinn? Look I've been thinking, and we need to talk. Anyway I'm trying to arrange that you fly over to see us in Philly. I guess I'll talk to you later." Josh said before hanging up.
I walked over to the recorder and erased the message.
All of a sudden I was becoming numb to life, to everything around me. I was impervious to the pain. Invincible to the hurt and most of all falling out of whatever cloud I was on. Reality had set in and now I was staring it in the face.
I picked up the phone and called the only person I had to call.
"Hello?" She yawned
"Lola?" I asked unsure of the person on the line.
"Corinn, oh hey did you enjoy last night?" She smiled
"Yes thank you."
"So I'm guessing Steve was nice."
"yes he brought my drunk butt home and was a gentleman about it."
"is he there?" She giggled
"No!"
"Oh darn."
"Well anyway I got a call from Josh."
"DId you talk?'
"No I didn't pick up. he wants to talk though and wants me to come see him."
"That's good right?"
"Not exactly. What do I tell him? That I want to break up because of my ex and his friend."
"Yeah sure."
"Easier said then done."
"Look think about what you want out of your life and what you have and what you want out of him. Compare it all and you'll figure it out."
"I can do that. Thanks. I'll talk to you later maybe come by the diner."
"I'll see you then." She said before hanging up.
