Called to Community.

Acts of the Apostles.

Question #1

What is the one key idea of this chapter. pay attention to the title of the chapter!

The major idea in chapter six is called to community. Early on, the church needed communities because of the constant persecution followers were facing. Communities in the early church allowed for a safe environment where follower’s faith could grow. Communities provided a safe haven and assurance to followers who struggled from persecution. These communities helped spread followers’ good news, and allowed for a rapid growth of their faith. We need communities today for the same reasons. Being in a community gives us the opportunity to grow in our faith with the help of others who share in our beliefs. Our religion is based on the denial of ones self for the love of neighbor and with out a community, our faith’s greatest commandment could have never been lived out.

Question #2

Write about two major ideas you want to remember. Write a short paragraph on each clearly stating the idea and then telling why you want to remember it.

One idea from chapter six I want to remember is martyrdom. Martyrdom is defined as dying for one’s faith. In the time of the early church many followers of Jesus were persecuted by Roman and Jewish authorities for practicing what they believed. On many occasions followers risked their lives in order to live out the mission of Jesus Christ, love the Lord with all your heart and love your neighbor as yourself. These early Christians faced death going to church and practicing what they believed in. These followers struggled in their journey to find Christ as they had to risk everything in order to do so. Eleven out of the twelve apostles of Jesus were martyred and died painful deaths, all for standing up for what they believed was right. I want to remember martyrdom, because so often to I take for granted the freedom of religion. I have so many opportunities to follow Christ and many times I don’t take advantage of those opportunities. I need to better use my freedom and practice my religion even when it is not the most convenient for me.

Another idea I want to remember is missionaries. Missionaries are people who bring the gospel to those who have not heard it and who help further education, social, and medical developments in underdeveloped areas. Paul was one of the Church’s greatest missionaries. He went on three missionary journeys, and taught people about the good news of Jesus Christ. Paul led people away from their former beliefs and way of life. Many stopped worshipping false gods and turned to the God of Jesus. He met many people and found that some were particularly helpful and others were simply rude. I want to remember this, because one day I might be called to be a missionary. I would love to go around the world teaching about my religion, and trying to help others grow in what they believe. I think a key idea I need to remember about a missionary is that there are evil people in the world that will reject others, but there are also people who are supportive and eager help.
