Question #1

What is the one key idea of this chapter. pay attention to the title of the chapter!

Although the title of the chapter is “Called to Be Compassionate,” I think the major idea of chapter four is Called to Discipleship. In the gospel of Mark we are reminded that the most important decision we will ever make is the one to follow Jesus. And in order to be true followers we need to be open to him. This call to discipleship starts at baptism when we are “seeds,” and in order for our seeds to grow we must be open to the word of Jesus. Next, we are called to fulfill our duty in the Kingdom of God. This growth process begins on earth and is carried into heaven. We are to live our life the way Jesus wants us to, by respecting others and dedicating our lives to God. Finally, in our call to discipleship, we are to have faith, hope, and trust in Jesus. Although there will be times of hardship and struggle we are to have full trust in him. This means that we must rid ourselves of distractions including wealth and fortune. In order to be true disciples we are to have faith and faith is trusting, believing and surrendering to God who is revealed in Jesus Christ.

Questions #2

Write about two major ideas you want to remember. Write a short paragraph on each clearly stating the idea and then telling why you want to remember it.

One idea I want to remember from chapter four is conversion experiences. A conversion experience turns us toward God and encourages us to search to understand and do what God desires of us. These moments come in many different ways, in the changes we have in life, our disappointments, failures, and the insights we gain. These experiences can happen at any age and at any time. One thing that is certain about conversion experiences is that they will change us. I want to remember this idea, because it reminds me that even though I may be in a period of time in my life when I tend to stray from God, there is always room for me to change. I understand that it will take totally dedication, but I believe with time my life will be lead completely back to Jesus Christ.

Another idea I want to remember from chapter four is the lessons learned through Jesus’ Passion and death. They are: Prayer strengthens us to face and embrace the realities of life. Faith can overcome fear. Following Jesus means dying to self and embracing the cross, in hope of gaining new life. The power of good is stronger than the power of evil. And, suffering is a part of life. These lessons are a guideline for Christians to follow in order to be more like Jesus. They remind us that discipleship is following the way of the cross, and dedicating ones life toward God who is revealed in Jesus. I want to remember these lessons because they will help me to better understand Jesus, and allow me to see him in my actions, and the way I care and love others. My mission in life is to be like Jesus and these guidelines help me do so.
