Question #1

What is the one key idea of this chapter. pay attention to the title of the chapter!

Fulfillment of the Covenant. For my religion, Catholicism, the fulfillment of the covenant is especially vital. Catholics find there roots in the Jewish religion and the Jews find their fulfillment in the Exodus. For us the Exodus was particularly important because our savior, Jesus is reminded of God's love for his people in the "old covenant" (the Exodus.) Jesus, through death and resurrection makes the old covenant a new covenant. Jesus' new covenant centers on the idea of mercy and love, and through Jesus' act of selflessness, he becomes our exodus and savior.

Questions #2

Write about two major ideas you want to remember. Write a short paragraph on each clearly stating the idea and then telling why you want to remember it.

Two major ideas in this chapter are the Pentecost and the Gospels. Pentecost was a life changing moment in the lives of Jesus’ disciples and showed the true power of the Holy Spirit. The event of Pentecost, when the spirit came down on Jesus’ disciples with a loud noise, blowing wind and tongues of fire allowing men to speak in tongues, is especially important because it forever changed the world. From then on each person was touched by the spirit’s power and Jesus’ message was spread all over the world.

The Gospels are an important group of writings talked about in the first chapter. This set of books is the first four books in the New Testament which present Jesus’ teachings. Although the Gospels differ in many ways, each conveys the good news of Jesus, his life, death, and resurrection. These Gospels are not biographies or literal interpretations, rather they are testimonies of faith that depict time, language and culture. The stories are true and timeless, they tell of God’s dreams, love, and forgiveness for us. The writers, Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John, evangelists told these stories to uncover the center of the religious encounter of the community, Jesus.

I would like to remember the idea of Pentecost because it teaches about the power of the spirit and how it affected my world, and the Gospels because they teach about my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. I want a deeper understand of my faith, and Pentecost and the Gospels give that to me.

Question #3.

One image that captures the chapter for you.

Question #4.

One significant question you have from this chapter. It can be intellectual or personal.

How do you think Jesus felt having to die for what he believed? Do you think that God would have made his covenant with someone else if Jesus refused?

Question # 5.

Do one of the "Living the Gospel" questions at the end of the chapter. Write out the question, reflect upon it and write out your answer. How will the world be different because you were born? Choose "one little bit" you can do today to make the world better for someone and then do it.

The world will be different, becuase I will bring a new outlook to it. I will care for others and make sure I am always loyal to my friends. No matter what race, gender, ethnicity I will love my neighbor as myself, and strive to do good with the talents I have. As Thea Bowman said, I will light my candle and make it shine for all to see. With Thea as my role model I will work to understand others cultures and races.

One thing I could do is visit a homeless man in the city of St. Louis. I could go down town to St. Patrick's center and mentor and talk to this person. I will make sure he has all the vitals for life, and a caring friend. I will also try and help him find a place to call home, and an employment oppurtunity. Not only will I make a friend, I will be a helpful hand for someone in need.
