5ESS Notes

The Primay fuctions of a 5ESS are: Three types of 5ESS Switches:
In a 5ESS CDX The CM is replaced by a Compact CM. A compact CM does not support as many SM 's as a normal CM.

In a 5ESS VCDX , the AM , and CM are replaced by an Administrative Workstaion -AW. There is no CNI , the SM handles out of band signaling through the Packet Switch Unit - PSU . Only one SM can be used with a VCDX. In a VCDX the SM Handles 100% of the call processing. VCDX Cannot use Remote Switching Modules - RSM.

5ESS can be used for:
The 5ESS is made up of different modules. The 4 types of modules are:
Administrative Module - AM Common Network Interface - CNI Communications Module CM Switching Module SM
Information is passed between the CNI, AM and the CM over cables known as Dual Serial Channels DSCH

VCDX Connects directly to the SM using ethernet and Control Processor Intervention -CPI.

Information is passed between the CM and SM over network controll and timing links -NCT

System Software

The 5ESS has the following types of software.
The VCDX Contains all of the software mentioned. In addition it contains Sun Solaris Software to operate the Sun Workstation.

Call Processing Software

Maintenance

Flexibility The VCDX can only be equiped with 1 SM if growth beyond 1 SM is desired, the VCDX can be converted to a full sized 5ESS.

Call within the same office

  1. Callers SM line hardware and software determine type of call
  2. Call type information passed to CM
  3. CM Routes call to appropriate SM
In a VCDX both parties would be connected to the same SM . There is no CM in a VCDX.

Call to another Office

  1. Callers SM line hardware and software determine type of call
  2. Call type information passed to the CM
  3. CM Routes call to the SM with appropriate trunk hardware

Both preceeding examples used In band signaling.

Long distance call

  1. Callers SM hardware and software determines type of call
  2. Call type information passed to CM
  3. CM Routes call to the SM with appropriate trunk hardware (Connected to callers long distance carrier)

  4. Long distance calls use out of band signaling ( CCS Network)
