The Extension Gene

The E gene is also known as the extension gene...this is what turns an orange into a chestnut, a sable point into a siamese sable. It is less dominant that the steel gene, but more dominant than the non-extension or [e][e] gene. This gene series very similar to the "A" series in that their are 3 gene possibilities. [E(s)], [E] or [e].

A self black rabbit would be, a "self", "black", "full colored", "non-dilute", "extended" rabbit and would have the following code:

[a][a]-[B][?]-[C][?]-[D][?]-[E][?]

If the rabbit inherits the agouti gene it becomes a chestnut instead of a black. And has the following Code:

[A][?]-[B][?]-[C][?]-[D][?]-[E][?]

Silver martens and otters also need this gene, as do the himalayan varieties.
