WORSE THAN 2000 :  TUESDAY'S ELECTORAL DISASTER
By William Rivers Pitt

Monday 08 November 2004

  A poster named 'TruthIsAll' on the DemocraticUnderground.com forums laid out the questionable results of Tuesday's
election in succinct fashion:

            "To believe that Bush won the election, you must also believe:

          That the exit polls were wrong; that Zogby's 5pm election day calls for Kerry winning Ohio and Florida were wrong
(he was exactly right in his 2000 final poll);
          That Harris' last-minute polling for Kerry was wrong (he was exactly right in his 2000 final poll);
          That incumbent rule #1 - undecideds break for the challenger - was wrong;
          That the 50% rule - an incumbent doesn't do better than his final polling - was wrong;
          That the approval rating rule - an incumbent with less than 50% approval will most likely lose the election - was
wrong;
          That it was just a coincidence that the exit polls were correct where there was a paper trail and incorrect (+5% for
Bush) where there was no paper trail;
          That the surge in new young voters had no positive effect for Kerry;
          That Kerry did worse than Gore against an opponent who lost the support of scores of Republican newspapers who
were for Bush in 2000;
          And that voting machines made by Republicans with no paper trail and with no software publication, which have been
proven by thousands of computer scientists to be vulnerable in scores of ways, were not tampered with in this election."

         WE HAVE:
                old-style vote spoilage in minority communities.
                electronic voting machines losing votes and adding votes all across the country.
                electronic voting machines whose efficiency and safety have not been tested.
                electronic voting machines that offer no paper trail to ensure a fair outcome.
                central tabulators for these machines running on Windows software, compiling results that can be
demonstrably tampered with.
                the makers of these machines publicly professing their preference for George W. Bush.
                voter trends that stray from the expected results.
                and these machines counting millions of votes all across the country.

                                                                 THE POWER OF EXIT POLLS

            Dick Morris, author of Rewriting History, a rebuttal of Sen. Clinton's memoir, Living History, political adviser to
Clinton, and later Bush supporter said,
            "Exit polls are almost never wrong.
            So reliable are the surveys tha actually tap voters as they leave the polling places that they are used as guides to
the relative honesty of elections in Third World countries....
            The networks got the exit polls wrong [no, they got them right].  Not just some of them.  They got all of the Bush
states wrong according to ABC-TV's exit polls,.  For example, Kerry was slated to carry Florida, Ohio, New Mexico,
Colorado, Nevada and Iowa, all of which Bush carried [he means stole].
            To screw up one exit poll is unheard of.  To miss six of them is incredible.  It boggles the imagination how pollsters
could be that incompetent and invites speculation that more than honest error was at play here.  [The polls were telling
the truth and the alleged counts were lies]
            The mistaken exit polls infiltrated all three networks and the cable news outlets and had a chilling effect on the
coverage of election night.
            While all anchors refrained from announcing the exit-poll results, it was clear from the context of their comments
that they expected Kerry to win and wondered if Bush could hold any key state....
            This was no mere mistake.  Exit polls cannot be as wrong across the board as they were on election night.  I
suspect foul play.
            To screw up one exit poll is unheard of.  To miss six of them is incredible.  It boggles the imagination how pollsters
could be that incompetent.
             It is easier to assume that a compass is not pointing north than to assume that an exit poll is incorrect.  It takes
a deliberate act of fraud and bias to get an exit poll wrong.  Since the variables of whether or not a person will actually
vote are eliminated in exit polling, it is like peeking at the answer before taking the test,”

        University of Pennsylvania Professor Steven Freeman, whose November 9 study of the exit poll and official tallies
in Florida, Ohio, and Pennsylvania finds the figures totally incompatible.
      “The likelihood of any two of these statistical anomalies occurring together is in the order of one-in-a-million.  The
odds of all three occurring together are 250 million to one,” the MIT Ph.D calculated.  "As much as we can say in social
science that something is impossible, it is IMPOSSIBLE that the discrepancies between predicted and actual vote counts
in the three critical battleground states of the 2004 election could have been due to chance or random error."
