In June of 1999 my friend, BJ, and I went on a missions trip. It was about January that God laid it on my heart to go on one. My second cousins went on one the previous year and that's how it began. Because I was only 13, there were a limited number of groups that would allow me to go. Big Rock Missions finally came up in my internet search. So I applied and got in. It was quite an experience. I worked hard, but didn't minister to the Jamaicans as much as I would have liked, I don't know if I was ready for that yet either though. God did work in me though. The trip is what really started the fire in my heart. I had grown up going to church, but the personal relationship never set in until then. I run to Him with everything. God also gave me the ability to love everyone... no matter what. I have that love which allows me to just love anyone because they are a human. This does NOT mean I approve of everything they do though. I love everyone because they were made in God's likeness and have the ability to be good. Jamaica was the best thing to happen to me in my life so far. |

This is us... It was our last night in Jamaica. We had a party with pizza and pop at the hotel, in Ocho Rios, that we stayed the weekend at. The Jamaicas that are with us, we brought as a thank you for helping us with our work back in Harmons. Everyone pitched in however much of the money they wanted, which they could of used for suveniors. We brought 4 Jamaicans with us... that's $400 from a group of about 23, I think. That was cool. Also that night we gathered in Henry's room and talked about our experience. I loved it. | ||||||||||||||||||||

This was scanned from one of the digital pictures taken during the trip, printed onto paper. So it isn't the greatest, but at least you can see the faces better than the other one on this page. Okay, here we go: Back: Melissa, Kristen, BJ#1, Marcus, barely alive BJ#2 (she wasn't feeling all that well that day, and then got really sick for the next couple days), Andy, Brandy, and Anna. 3rd: Jeremie, Lindsey, Monica, Me. 2nd: Jeremy, Rachel. Front: Tashlyn, Carla, Becca, Kevin, Abby. We went to a couple beaches. I think this was the first one we went to. It was cool "swimming" in the ocean. Actually, it was Alex that swam way out... said he was going to swim to Cuba or Barbadoes or something... He came back like 5 minutes later saying he already got there =) It was also cool getting the live sand dollars. Now if i go to another ocean i can find em..... You dig with your feet and then dive down and get em. There were a lot there..... I took a couple w/ me..... they stunck up my suitcase and broke.. not too worth while, but that's okay. We also visited a black sand beach... why's it named that? cuz there's black sand! it's the coolioest thing, but very odd.... i think it's like volcanic rock grinded down.. something to do with valcones... but it's weird seeing a black coastline... Jamaica was a blessing, a time of real spiritual work in my life. |
