ECZEMA

I believe our first 'clue' that he had eczema was
at 2 days old! He was to be released that morning
but a rash started on his face! He was kept in another
day and blood tests were done - all was fine but the
rash remained.  Little did we know that rash
would be only the beginning!!

For the first 9 months of his life - almost continuously
he had eczema patches about the size of a loonie
on his face, back of one arm and side of one leg.
His diet consisted of breast milk and Benadryl™!
These weren't just red, dry patches, they were red,
bleeding, oozing patches.
Nothing like someone coming over to see the 'cute
little baby', only to have them gasp and say "Oh,
what happened to his face".  I took him with me to
the school one day to pick up the girls. He was wearing
a cute little short set, where his legs and arms were
bare. As I passed a small cluster of children in the
hallway I heard one child say "Oh look, that baby
was in an accident"

We tried different creams, soaps and prescriptions.
They helped some days - and other days - nothing
helped!  We finally went to see a Dermatologist.
I was told to use the prescribed 'Cortisone' cream
and I was given a prescription for antibiotic cream
to mix and apply because I was paranoid about
infection with open sores exposed. As an 'extra'
tip as we were leaving (one I swear to this day was
the key) the Dermatologist told us to apply the
prescribed creams and then to cover that with a
layer of 'Penaten-Cream®' to act as a barrier.
Soon after his 'patches' started clearing up!
First his arm, then his face and lastly his leg!
After 9 months my little guy FINALLY had a cheek
as smooth as his baby soft butt!! Yahoooo!

After all the different soaps we tried, it was
'Baby's Own™' that became THE one!! I use it from
head to toe on him (no shampoo) and it doesn't seem
to irritate his skin!  Actually, now that's the only soap
in the house - since Dad has sensitive skin too
(AHA!! Genetics!!) NOW, finally my little guy has
that wonderful 'baby smell' instead of stale oatmeal!!

Aaaaaand after 3 years of watching his sisters play in a
bubble bath we have finally found a bubble bath that
he can use!! Sensitive Skin Bubble Bath by AVON©!
He just looooves having a bubble bath now and his
skin seems to be fine after using this one.
They (bubble baths)dont happen as often as
he'd like but every now and then he gets his
'special' bath!

We still have bouts of eczema, he has one patch on
the back of his knee that flares up quite a bit.
There are times he looks fantastic and some days
when he gets in the bathtub and he'll say "Oh no,
the red spots are all over me AGAAAIN".  Our
Paediatrician has given him a new cream (a mixture
with tar) for the flare-ups, and when things are
looking good - Vaseline® all over after his bath seems
to keep him smooth!
