The Girl who Overcame Time, and the Boy who was Just Overcome | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Inuyasha, a half demon, steals the Shikon no Tama (the Jewel of Four Souls)from a village shrine and races towards the forest, declaring that he can finally become full demon at last. A woman yells at him, and he turns to look just as her arrow pierces his chest, pinning him against the tree behind him. He drops the jewel, and seemingly dies. The woman, a priestess named Kikyo, who is bleeding heavily from her shoulder, goes to the jewel and picks it up, her little sister running up to her and begging for Kikyo to get her wound taken care of. Kikyo declines, saying that she is going to die, and wants the Sacred Jewel to be burned with her body, so that it can never be abused by those who would use it for evil. As she is being burned, she thinks to herself that she will take the Shikon no Tama with her into the other world. 500-600 years later, Kagome Higurashi is listening to her grandfather tell her the story of the Shikon jewel, which she could care less about. She interrupts him, reminding him it's her 15th birthday tomorrow, and is rewarded by a mummified kappa (water imp/demon) hand, which she gives to her cat, Buyo, to eat. When she leaves for school on her birthday, she notices her brother standing near the family shrine. He tells her the cat went into the shrine, but hasn't come out. Kagome, annoyed, goes down to the well inside the shrine to look for the cat. All of a sudden, hands come out of the well, pulling her down into the well, and into the arms of a centipede monster, who insists Kagome has "the jewel" and to give it to her. Kagome breaks free using some sort of energy blast from her hand, and falls to the bottom of the well. When she climbs out, she finds herself in the middle of a forest, rather than in the shrine. She looks around, thinking she's merely lost, but still in her own time. She sees the large tree which stands in her front yard in the distance, and runs toward it, only to arrive and find Inuyasha still pinned to it, unchanged. Kagome, thinking he's asleep, climbs up to him and begins to play with his dog ears. She is captured there by some villagers, who take her to the village, trying to decide if she is a demon or a spy. Their priestess, Kaede, arrives, and notices a remarkable resemblance to the late Kikyo, her older sister. She takes in Kagome and feeds her, apologizing for the actions of the villagers. The centipede monster attacks the village, searching for Kagome, who runs out of Kaede's house when they hear the commotion. The monster tries to attack her twice, yelling for the jewel. Kaede asks if Kagome has it, and Kagome honestly says she doesn't know. Kaede says they must lead the monster to the dry well in the forest. Kagome takes off towards the woods, knowing the monster will chase after her. She yells for help, and we see Inuyasha wake up, which shows that he wasn't dead, merely asleep for 50 years. He declares that he smells the blood of the woman who killed him coming closer. The monster causes Kagome to trip and fall, landing at Inuyasha's feet. Inuyasha tells "Kikyo" to kill the centipede with one hit, like she killed him. Kagome declares that she is NOT Kikyo, but Inuyasha starts to argue that she smells just like her, then sniffs, and admits that she's right. Kagome is attacked yet again by the monster, and Inuyasha is concerned when he learns that it is trying to get the Shikon no Tama, the very jewel he himself sought. The monster bites into Kagome's side, and throws her into the air, and the jewel flies out from inside her body, where it had been all this time. Inuyasha insists Kagome give him the jewel, but she is attacked and pinned to the tree against Inuyasha. The monster swallows the jewel, so Inuyasha, who still wants the jewel, tells Kagome to remove the arrow, telling her it's that, or everyone dies, including her. She pulls out the arrow, breaking a 50 year old spell and releasing Inuyasha, who attacks and destroys the monster with one strike. Kaede takes the jewel from the centipede's body and gives it to Kagome. Then Inuyasha steps forward, demanding she hand over the jewel, or else he'll attack her, too.... Needless to say, Kagome's surprised. Wasn't he supposed to be the good guy? |
