Engine and Drive Train
My bird started out with a very small heart. As told at the main page she had the 2.5L four cylinder in her and the 5 speed manual. I liked the transmission but the engine had to go. Unfortunately I found out that all the gears in it were missing their teeth so lets just say there wasn't much to the transmission. I wasn't able to put the engine I wanted into her because of some local emissions requirements (can only put in what was offered in her year). So I was left with the Chevy 305. I was lucky enough that a friend of mine had one that he didn't need so for $56.00 and some help with one if his car projects I was able to get a short block from him. As you can see from the following pics she was pretty ugly with rust and grim when I started but after a hot tank, Magnaflux, painting, and surfacing she cleaned up good. She was also bored out 30 over to about 314 cubic inches of displacement. Some of the technical information on the engine is that the engine is a 1979 Chevrolet engine that was out of a Oldsmobile, casting number is 460777. It had a 3.74 bore which when I had the machining done went up to 3.77. Stroke is standard at 3.48. With machining on the engine I am expecting anywhere from 10.0:1 to 10.5:1 compression from her. With the work done she is also running at about 310 cubes. The heads are 80-86 GM HO heads with casting number of 14022601 that have been completely rebuilt with high compression springs and new valves. They are stock at 58cc chamber size and intake is 1.84" and exhaust is 1.5". I also have Federal Mogul flat top cylinders and bearings. The cylinders have chrome-moly rings too. I have a Crane Energizer cam with hydraulic lifters, the cam is running a .454/.454 lift and 216º/216º duration. Here's some before pictures on the engine:
At this point I have the rings and pistons to install and that's about it. I am waiting for my next influx of cash to come in so I can start on the other parts of the rebuild.
December 4, 2004 Okay, long time since my last update but been busy with getting my truck up and running (I have a 65 C10 Long/Wide, but that is for another page). I've done a little more since my last update. I now have the engine cleaned and painted red. I have installed the pistons heads and oil pump/pickup, along with the timing chain. I am hoping for a little money for Christmas and/or a gift card for Summit Racing so I can get a few more parts like the oil pan and timing chain cover. I would, at least, like to get the bottom of the engine buttoned up before the end of the year. I am also getting some pics of the engine so far this Christmas to post.
December 12, 2004 I haven't done anything since the last post to the engine but did get a new digital camera so got some pictures of the engine so far;
As you can see it looks a little better then when I first got it. I am hoping to have the oil pan and timing cover on by January and the intake manifold and pushrods in by Spring. I will at that point get some new pictures online of that. You can also see that I just took these pictures tonight and couldn't wait to upload them. I also found out some bad new about my transmission. I WAS going to use it on with my 305 but when I disassembled it I found A LOT of chewed up metal and smooth, and I mean smooth, gears. So now I either need to convert the car over to an automatic, probably a TH-350 or a 700R4 or go out and find a cheap 5 speed. Think I will go for the TH-350 though.
February 5, 2005 Well I haven't gotten allot done but did get a couple of parts for the engine. Was able to get the timing chain cover and the valve covers from Summit Racing. The timing chain cover is a two piece type with a solid backing ring that the oil pan holds onto with a chrome front cover that can be removed with out dropping the oil pan, which is nice in case of a cam or chain replacement. The valve covers are also from Summit Racing. They are the Edelbrock Signature series. I got them tall since I will be putting in roller rockers soon. I put the covers on just so they don't get banged up at all, even though I don't have my push rods or rockers installed (or even bought) yet.
