Journal 3: Reason
1) One paragraph summary of the key idea summarizing the topic of the week
This week in theology our main focus was Reason. Reason is "the power to think in such a way that we proceed from what we know to what we do not yet know." The two types of reason are deductive and inductive reasoning. We use reason to avoid the Five Common Thinking Errors, and help our reason by using the Five Steps to Critical Thinking and the Process of Knowing. Reason also helps us to know how the mind works and why it does what it does.
2) List and explain three of the most important ideas that you want to remember from this section/week
1. First of all I want to remember the Process of Knowing, because this will help me along the right path and help me to think more critically.
2. Secondly, I want to remember the three ways to acquire knowledge.
3)Last I want to remember about theology and philosophy. Theology is known as faith seeking understanding, and it is the exploration and examination of one's faith using reason. Some different types of theology are Biblical Theology, Sacramental Theology, Liturgical Theology, and Trinitatian Theology. Philosophy means the "love of wisdom". Philosophers study philosophy and ask big questions like "What is the meaning of life?". A philosopher emphasizes reasoned knowledge. Philosophy and Science differ, because scientists emphasize observation and philosophers emphasize speculation. Some different types of philosophy are Political Philosophy, Natural Philosophy, Philosophy of History, and The Philosophy of Religion.

This is a diagram of the brain and it reminds me of the discussions we had about how the brain works and why it works. One Good Question you should keep with you to ponder. Do I always use reason to alter my decisions and using the Five Steps to Critical Thinking or am I falling into the lure of the Five Common Thinking Errors? What should you try to do to make yourelf a better person, a more faithful person, from this study? To make myself a better person of faith I need to use reasoning in my decisions and think about the decision I am just about to make and not just do whatever comes to my head first, because that could cause a problem. I also need to realize what my "wants" and "needs" are in life, because this is essential for me to realize so I can become more like the person that I want to be. I want to be someone who does not waste their money on everything just because it seems appealing at the time. I would rather be a person who savesd that money for something that I will need down the road.
