Suffix - A suffix is a word part that is added to the end of a root word that changes the meaning of the root words. Consonant Suffix - A consonant suffix is a suffix that begins with a consonant. The following consonant suffixes will be practiced during this lesson: -ly, -ty, -ful, -fully, -ment, -some, -less, -ness. Root Word - A root word is the main word part to which suffixes are attached. Spelling Rule: When adding a consonant suffix to a root word, write the root word and then "just add" the suffix. Usually you do not change the spelling of the root word when you add a consonant suffix. Spelling Rules for Formation of Plurals: 1. Most of the time, add -s to the word to spell its plural (baskets, uncles). 2. If a word ends in s, ss, x, z, sh, or ch, add -es to spell its plural (glasses, brushes, churches). 3. If a word ends in y preceded by a consonant, change the y to i and add -es (pennies, babies). 4.
