The Ties That Bind

Around this time of the year, as the leaves are beginning to fall and a chill wind cools the air, the autumn season signals a time of death and decay. It won't be long before Halloween stirs our evil emotions, and on cue Hollywood will release its annual tradition of horror films. While such monsters as Michael Myers, Jason and even Freddy Krueger once ruled the darkness of the movie theater and our own nightmares, their scary tactics became more whimsical than frightful. Instead of being afraid, audiences challenged the entertainment industry to shock them even more.

Be careful what you wish for because, unfortunately, you will get it. The new kings of terror won't be found at any cinema in the coming weeks. Rather, the ultimate big budget horror has been unleashed in the World Wrestling Federation in the form of the Undertaker and Big Show! But will they be together for a sequel?

The evil that caught the Federation and its superstars by surprise was swift and sure and certainly combined the strangest of bedfellows. For one, the two monstrous athletes were no strangers to lashing out at each other. After all, it was the Big Show who nearly drove the Phenom straight back to hell with a chokeslam through the ring! And in response, Undertaker tore open his nemesis with the precision of a surgeon-using a ste4el chair as a scalpel. Now those pages have been turned and a new, more menacing chapter has been written.

And what about the "Brothers Grim?" It was just one year ago that Undertaker and Kane formed what many thought was the most destructive force ever in the Federation. The chances that their body count would be surpassed in our life times, seemed slim, In retrospect, their destruction was mere child's play compared to the Armageddon the Big Show and the Phenom have perpetrated. In "Big Brother's" own words, was simply the fact that Kane was unable-or unwilling-to let his heart fade to black? While compassion began to fuel the gears of the "Big Red Machine," the Undertaker and Big Show found a common bond in that they were able to hate without a reason, a trait often shared by other horror icons.

Could it have been Kane's emotions, and eventual friendship with X-Pac, that resulted in the alliance between Undertaker and the Big Show? Remember: just prior to combing forces, the Undertaker and Big Show shared a common enemy in Kane. Surely, when the "Brothers Grim" were at their most devastating, the Phenom thought that his younger sibling would one day walk in his unholy footsteps. But that all came crashing down, thanks to the most natural of human emotions.

Angered by this "weakness," and perhaps feeling somewhat deceived, Undertaker may have set out to destroy his sibling once and for all. Now, instead of Kane inheriting his brother's legacy, has the Phenom chosen the Big Show to serve as his demonic apprentice for the time being? Of course, the student was more than willing to take part in this mission, as Kane had been a thorn in his side for months. Let's not forget, it was Kane who cost the Big Show his destiny as the 1999 King of the Ring.

If the "Big Red Machine" was the force behind Hell's new wrecking crew, the question now becomes, what keeps them together? The answer to that is Stone Cold Steve Austin and the Federation Championship. The Undertaker and the Big Show have already agreed that their alliance will come to a painful conclusion. Fate has already written the ending of this horror story, as the Undertaker will eventually bury the knife in the Big Show's back. In the meantime, though, what happens before the final chapter is yet to be determined and they are free to buzz saw through the competition and pick apart not just Stone Cold but whoever holds the gold any way they please.

If the Big Show knows that the Undertaker will eventually sever his ties with him, why would he want to help him? Obviously, like the Phenom, the superstar realizes this is a sure path to the top of the Federation. An opportunity like this is the reason Big Show came to the Federation in the first place and what continues to motivate him. With or without the Undertaker's consent, Big Show will one day become the most dominating force in the Federation-a title the Undertaker currently holds. What better way to achieve that goal than to take it from the Lord of Darkness if and when he gives him a reason to? With his tenure in the Corporation, Big Show has also proven he will align himself with anyone if it's a means to his end. He doesn't even necessarily have to believe in the demonic philosophy of his partner. Surely, both these superstars can annihilate Stone Cold… but only one can hold the championship in the end! This is the Big Show Show's chance to finally have it all.

By all indications, the Undertaker and Big Show's horror story cannot be ended prematurely by anyone. Many of the Federation's top superstars have already tried to stand in their way-and have suffered for it. Stone Cold, Triple H, Kane, The Rock, the Acolytes, X-Pac and the Road Dogg are just a few of the victims of their incredible power. If the collective force of the Federation can't even slow the Undertaker and the Big Show, what can? The brutally honest answer to that may be... nothing.

As the audience, we are witnesses to the total devastation that has become the Undertaker and the Big Show. But, unlike in the movies, this is reality. We can't stop the film, and their co-stars cannot escape the screen or the fate that awaits them. It has always been said that the fans drive the World Wrestling Federation. So, what if the obsession with terror has resulted in something that cannot now be stopped?

One thought will undoubtedly disturb any fans as the Undertaker and the Big Show's carnage unfolds…

Good doesn't always win over evil in the end.
