1. The key idea illustrated in this section is how major moral issues come up in many different pahts of life we can choose for ourselves, be it military, meidical, or business. We learned the criteria for going to war and being able to call it just and also the main guidelines you have to follow in war. Following these rules isn't always so easy though as was shown in the case of My Lai because of pressure from society, training, comrades, and survival instinct. In hte medical world, many doctors are faced with moral and ethical decisions everyday. Sometimes the right thing to do objectively is not always the right thing to do morally but doctors have to decide the matter for themselves, sometimes in little time. Finally, in business ethics, we talked about the main obvious problem of how to treat employees, and differnt companies with different views in some cases were able to be more than fair and still turn out a great profit. 2a.) I'd like to remember the My Lai Massacre because it not only shows ho terrible Vietnam was, but also how good, simple, and honest young men can just go completely against their conscience to do something they know to be morally wrong and evil. How the military training can brainwash people into doing stuff they know to be wrong is amazing. Even more amazing is how some people still feel they did nothing wrong. b.) I'd like to remember the ordinary and extraordinary means when it comes to saving lives. Ordinary are the usual and obligated treatments that require a good chance of success with minimal suffering. Extraordinary usually have low success chances and are often seen as just a means to prolong life and suffering. With all the new technology that can keep brain-dead people alive for years, the distinction between these two just gets ignored but shouldn't. c.) From the business section i'd like to remember what Aaron Feuerstein said in his interview. The reporter said after the fire, Aaron could have just taken the 300 million dollars in insurance and retired. He replied, " and do what with it? Eat some more? Buy another suit?" This is amazing because it's completely against many businesses views and goals to get more money, by any means. He said he was also appalled that he was being recognized for just doing the right thing and that statement said a lot about our society and business world's values, many bad things. 3.Image to remind. |

4. How often do i neglect the needs and wants of other for my own personal desires and needs? (Even if it isn't for money), do I place myself before others a lot? How can I change that? 5. I can become a more moral person by thinking about these dilemmas and deciding what I should probably do to make a morally good choice. I should also keep in mind the 10 Catholic Social Teachings in mind when going into business, so not get caught up in money like Icahn or Crawford. |
