Today the Stocks are looked upon as a bit of fun at village fairs etc, but to a villager of the middle ages this was not the case. The Pillory and stocks were a daily part of life. They were both a source of entertainment and punishment depending which side of the them you were on. This form of punishment was only used for minor crimes, things today that we would not even see as on offence. Such as being drunkarness ,cursing, and being homeless, or even being from another village.

The STOCKS

These were seen as the lesser evil of the two punishments, although an offender could spend up to a week set in the stocks.

The Stocks generally held the feet, and sometimes the hands in wooden boards thus allowing the person to be pelted with rotten food etc, hence the expression "Stock Still"

The PILLORY

Theses are also now also call "Stocks" by most people, however this was rather a different punishment, as the prisoner had there head and hands set between two wooden boards and was normally bent forward nether standing or kneeling.

The Pillory was by far the worst of the two types and this was also shown in the amount of time the punishment would be for, the length of time would not normally be more than two hours as the offender had less movement and had no chance of missing the missies thrown by the crowed.

The term "pillorying press" is now most commonly used referance to this device, although in most cases, people would not realise the original origins of this word, however the true meaning has not be lost with time, as it still means to be humiliated and ridiculed in public, by the daily newspapers.
