Racism and Bigotry in the Golden Age - Unless you were white, you were the enemy or the victim

Racism

One of the most interesting things you will find in the Golden Age comics and in any popular media of the era was stereotypical characters. Often facial characteristics were overemphasized. During the war the Japanese and the Germans were portrayed as subhuman and evil doers. Blacks have always played the role of the villain or jungle tribesman/savages. Even the most popular and mainstream cartoons had this theme from Blackhawk and Terry and the Pirates to The Spirit and Fiction House books. Even Bugs Bunny was into it, do you remember the one with the little black pygmy with the large bone in the hair and the overemphasized lips. Below are scans of some of the faces of racism.
