Fei: (muttering to himself) That’s just what I need. Good, strong coffee. Now where’s that coffee cake…
Fei: Ching Ching! Did you see that piece of coffee cake in the refrigerator?
Ching Ching: (entering the kitchen) That coffee cake? Well…I kind of threw it out, because it was looking moldy…
Fei: It wasn’t moldy; I just bought it the day before yesterday!!
Ching Ching: It’s just cake. Here, why don’t you eat this cheesecake I bought? It’s fresh.
Fei: I don’t want any cheesecake. I want coffee cake and I am going to get it myself.
Fei: And next time, don’t throw my things out without asking me!!
SLAM! The door slammed shut. Ching Ching stared at the door. She was really confused. Why the heck is he so mad about? It’s just a piece of lousy cake. Shrugging the matter off her mind, Ching Ching retreated to her room to practice her dance routine, taking with her the piece of cheesecake.
Fei stopped his car outside the cake shop and pushed the door. He stepped up to the counter.
Fei: Give me a piece of coffee cake.
Quin: I want a piece of coffee cake, please.
Server 2: Miss, there’s only one piece of coffee cake left, and our customer over there came in about the same time you do…so are you willing to let him have the cake?
Quin: (looked up and saw Fei) Fei?
Fei: Kwan? This is a coincidence! (turning to the server) Let her have the cake. I can choose something else.
Quin: No…let HIM have the cake. I’ll try something new.
Fei: Kwan, you take the cake. Coffee cake is your favourite.
Quin: You like coffee cake. You take it.
Fei: No, you take it.
Server 1: (looking quite exasperated) Sir, Miss, please. There are other customers behind you.
Fei and Quin: For the last time, YOU take it.
Server 2: Listen, why don’t you two just share the cake? (she quickly packed up the cake in a box and took the money from both Quin and Fei. She gave them back half the money) I’m really sorry to be rude, but…
Quin: It’s all right. I understood perfectly.
Quin: Honestly! It’s just a piece of cake, Fei! Why do you have to act so immature?
Fei: Excuse me? The last thing I saw, you weren’t exactly Miss Mature yourself! I know you wanted the cake, why do you want to give it to me? Why can’t you be selfish for once? You love the cake. Why give it to someone else?
Quin: Tsui Fei, there are other people in the world besides ourselves. Since you really want the cake, why can’t you have it?
Fei: Mo Chiu Kwan, don’t tell me now that I needed the cake desperately. Or that the cake really wants to be eaten by me.
Quin: What are you talking about?
Fei: Kwan, let’s not argue.
Quin: Fine. You have the cake.
Fei: Let’s share the cake.
Quin: Okay, you take the cake; I’ll meet you in the station cafeteria.
Fei: Kwan…wait. Did you drive here?
Quin: No, my car was in the shop for servicing.
Fei: I’ll drive you.
Quin: If you don’t mind, I’ll just hitch a ride with you.
At the station cafeteria…
Quin: So, umm…how’s work?
Fei: No major cases. What about you?
Quin: I just got here. No major work.
Korean: Miss Mo!??! When did you get back? So, YOU are the mysterious new physcologist! Why didn’t you come up to say hi? (Seeing Fei) Ohhh…your own private…(2 whacks landed on him)
Hoi and Gigi: Shut up, Korean.
Gigi: Err…Miss Mo, Fei Gor, enjoy your breakfast. Miss Mo, we’ll talk to you later.
Chi San: Quin, Fei. Quin, did you take the bus here? I told you I’d pick you up since your car is in the shop.
Quin: No…Fei drove me here. We…bumped into each other in the cake shop.
Chi San: Are you feeling okay now? How’s your sore throat?
Quin: Chi San…I’m okay. It wasn’t a sore throat, just a little itch in my throat.
Chi San: (in a mothering tone) You should avoid eating certain foods. Don’t eat anything greasy.
Fei: (in a sarcastic voice) I won’t bother YOU TWO now. I’m going back up to finish some paperwork.
Chi San: (staring after Fei) What caused that sudden reaction?
Quin: Is he thinking that there is something between us? Oh no. Chi San, you better explain to him. Don’t let him misunderstand…
Chi San: (smiled) Quin…look at you. Why are you so nervous?
Quin: …
Chi San: Even a fool could see you care a lot about our Fei.
Quin: Chi San…please…just explain to him. Don’t assume anything. If Gigi and the others thought there was something between us, I would want you to explain, too…
Chi San: Quin, you can’t fool me. But I’ll do as you say, don’t worry.
Quin: Thanks.
At Chi San’s office…
Chi San: I want to explain something to you.
Fei: Some best friend you are. How can you…
Chi San: Fei…
Fei: No, wait, I’m sorry. San Gor, I wish you two the best. Promise you’ll treat Kwan nicely. She didn’t get the treatment she deserves when she was with me; so I hope you’ll be able to give her more…don’t hurt her…
Chi San: Fei...wait…
Fei: (getting carried away) I’m leaving Kwan in your hands. You have to take care of her now. If you dare to upset Kwan, I’ll…
Chi San: Fei, would you stop jabbering and just listen to me? There’s nothing between Quin and me. We are just friends.
Fei: What?
Chi San: Fei, I think you and I should have a long talk. You’ll understand a lot better. And please don’t keep misunderstanding. Meet me at Coffee Cup after work.
Fei: I’m sorry; San Gor…my temper had gotten me again…
Chi San: We’ll talk later, Fei.
Fei walked into the kitchen and fixed himself a cup of coffee.
(Fei began rummaging in the refrigerator, but he couldn’t find his cake.)
(Fei stormed out of the kitchen, looking really mad.)
Server: Good morning, sir. How may I help you?
(At the same time, at the other end of the counter…)
(The two servers went to the cake display.)
(Quin grabbed the cake box and strode out of the shop. Fei ran after her.)
(Fei realized that he had gone beyond the “cake” and was actually talking about their love triangle. He shook his head.)
(Quin pushed the cake box into his arms and walked off. Fei ran after her and grabbed her arm. Quin stared at his hand, and Fei tightened his grasp.)
(Quin eased Fei’s hand off her arm.)
(Quin bit her lip and thought over it. Should I? Shouldn’t I? Oh, what the heck. It’s just one ride to the station. Quin nodded.)
(A huge smile broke over Fei’s face.)
Fei cut the piece of cake into half expertly. Quin accepted her half and began eating.
(Korean and the gang walked in.)
(Chi San entered the cafeteria.)
(Fei watched the whole exchange, jealousy burning up within him. Get over yourself. You have Ching Ching. It’s perfectly okay for Kwan to date. But San Gor? No way. You’re just imagining things. They are good friends. Who am I kidding? San Gor showed so much concern for her. Fei stood up abruptly. If he stayed, he knew he might say something he will regret.)
(Fei immediately regretted his tone. He sounded like a jealous loser. Mentally hitting himself, Fei left the cafeteria quickly.)
Fei: Why do you want to see me?
What does Chi San want to tell Fei? Meanwhile, Saturday drew near. Man is finally going to see Chi San. Can they really just be friends and nothing more?
