There were two major themes in this novel: the theme of vengeance and appearance vs. reality. Fortinbraus is only involved in the vengeance theme. After his father dies, he tries everything to avenge his death. His father died in the battle and lost his territory to King Hamlet. He wasted no time in avenging the death. He aspires to reclaim the lands and power to honor his father. Fortinbraus makes threats to the kingdom and King Claudius laughs as he addresses the problem. But just the act of threatening and making his intentions known to all is more of an attempt of vengeance than Hamlet. By the end of the play, Fortinbraus and his army are marching to King Claudius’s kingdom to fight and make an effort to reclaim land. When he marches into the house, he sees that everyone has perished and the kingdom is all his because of all the hatred and vengeance going on in the kingdom. Hamlet doesn't act on his father's death because he is scared that the spirit is lying to him and he is very indecisive. Hamlet had once chance when King Claudius was all alone for the first time in the novel, and he sees that Claudius is praying for forgiveness for his sins of killing King Hamlet. Upon seeing this, Hamlet feels he can not slay King Claudius while he is worshipping. Little does he know that he will never have another chance to kill him and that because of his irresolute actions, his entire family will die from one thing or another by the end. In the process of Hamlet's revenge, he destroys his family's honor and the family itself. They all perish because Hamlet didn't take action when he could have. Even Laertes acts quicker and more efficiently than Hamlet. Rather than approach vengeance in a responsible manner, Laertes and Hamlet handle in it in a murderous way. Due to this, everyone is destroyed and Fortinbraus has the opportunity to regain his kingdom, power and gain ever more. |
