Mental Illness

What is a mental illness?  Are they diseases that someone is born with, or is it because of their environment that they have these problems?  Both sides are arguable in the sense that not all illnesses are caused by either being born with it or the environment that person is in.

In Hamlet, Hamlet was thought of as being psychotic, maybe striving for attention, and having an Oedipal Complex towards his mother.

In his case, Hamlet’s environment looked like it caused his psychotic behavior.  The fact that Hamlet’s father died and his uncle took over the throne made Hamlet step closer to the edge.  When Hamlet’s mother married his uncle, his girlfriend (Ophelia) broke up with him, and he found out his uncle killed his father Hamlet went over that edge.  Hamlet was just not having a bad day but realized his life was falling into turmoil faster than he could mentally keep up.  This might explain Hamlet’s erratic behaviors throughout the play.

Or was Hamlet just doing these behaviors for attention?  Is there such a thing as a mental illness for people who crave attention?  For some this attention getting is repetitive and addictive making it harder for the person to be humble and away from the limelight.  Is it caused by depression?  Not having enough attention as a child could cause this in later years of life.  Being spoiled can also lead to the same condition quite possibly.

Hamlet dealt with this too as a child.  Possibly because his father was always gone when he was younger.  His father was too busy to talk and spend time with young Hamlet where it’s affecting him now when he’s an adult.  Yuric the jester was more of a father than Old Hamlet.  Yuric gave Hamlet the attention he needed and wanted.

Hamlet was also accused of having an Oedipal Complex which means he thought of his mother as more than a mother.  This is evident in the scene where Hamlet seems to go overboard with his mother.  Was Hamlet like this just because or was he like this because he thought him dad and uncle didn’t treat his mother well?  Some argue that Hamlet didn’t have an Oedipal Complex and that people were over examining the play.  It’s up to anyone who reads Shakespeare to figure this one out.

Mental Illness.  It can be caused by the environment or by being born with it.  As evident in Hamlet, anyone can have one depending on how life is right now and what happened in the past.
Many people believe in the supernatural. Some of those people have
even
encountered the supernatural. People have been visited by dead
relatives in
dream or when they are awake and have smelt their perfume when they had
died
years before.
Amelia Burnstead encountered her late husband, Steven, in a dream.
Steven
had recently died due to natural causes and Amelia as having a hard
time
getting past his death. About a week after his death she started having
dreams
with him in them. They would be about normal things like doing laundry
together,
watching television, and eating dinner. Since the dreams she has had an
easier
time dealing with Steven's death.
Jessica Vaneys’ husband, Peter, died unexpectedly in a car crash.
He
passed away on impact. Jessica death with his death fairly easily.
After a few
years she even remarried. One night she woke up at three a.m. to go to
the
restroom. When she turned on the light he was standing in the bathtub,
staring at
her. She shrugged it off and crawled bak into bed. Since then she has
gotten
used to seeing him, but recently she has noticed that when he
disappears she can
still smell his cologne. Her new husband doesn’t wear the same cologne
as
Peter and neither does her son. She cannot figure out why she is seeing
him after
so long. She has been to many psychiatrists and countless psychics.
They have
not ben able to help her with her problem. She has just learned to
accept it.
Many more people have had encounters with their deceased relatives,
friends or spouses. Some seek professional help while others are happy
just keeping
to themselves.
