SensoryAdd marbles waterplay.
Cut sponges in different shapes and add to waterplay.
Add different shaped blocks to sandplay.
Shape Math ![]()
Sequence square blocks from smallest to largest.
Sequence rectangle blocks from largest to smallest.On a large piece of poster board draw halves of shapes.
From another piece of poster cut out the other half of the shape.
Have kids match correct half to shape on the poster.
Tip! For younger kids outline the other half of shape like a puzzle.Using old pieces of wallpaper, christmas wrap or different
colored construction paper cut out sets of shapes.
Make sure prints or colors do not match. Use a variety of shapes.
Oval, rectangle, circle, square and triangle.
Have kids match the shapes.
Shape Science ![]()
Shape Feely Box:
Cut out shapes from carpet squares, cardboard and material.
See if kids can identify the shape.Use same feely box with small blocks for younger child.
Shape Evaporation: ![]()
Place same amount of water in a large round
and a small square cake pan. Mark the water level.
Let water stand for a week and chart evaporation.
Classifying Objects: ![]()
Get 5 shoe boxes. Draw a certain shape on each box.
Oval, rectangle, circle, square and triangle.
Have kids cut out pictures from magazines to add to correct box.
Get everybody together on the circle and pull out the pictures to name.
Dramatic Play ![]()
Shape Baker:
Set up a baking shop.
Add lots of playdough, rolling pins
and cookie shape cutters. Show kids how roll
dough out large and thin. Add larger shapes
from plastic jars and square pans to cut out larger shapes.
Arts & Crafts ![]()
Shape Sponge Painting:
Sponge Painting:
Cut shapes from sponges to dip in paint.
Secure the sponges with clothes pins to help keep fingers clean.Outside Tracing:
Cut shapes from cardboard to trace.
Show kids how to make a tree with a triangle.
A pool from a circle, a house from a square
and a car from a rectangle.Shape Mobiles:
Trace shapes on various sizes of colored construction paper.
Get the kids to cut the shapes out.
Don't worry about what they look like, praise them all :}
Use hole punchers to put a hole in each. Add a piece of yarn.
Tie onto a coat hanger.
Tip! Add duct tape to the sharp end of the hanger.Easel Idea:
Cut out large shapes from paper to use on the easel board.Shape Collage:
Provide different colored small shape pieces from construction paper.
Have kids glue them on another piece of heavy paper for a collage.Inside Tracing:
For the younger kids cut out basic shapes from cardboard into stencils.
They can control tracing easier on the inside than the outside.
Shape Circle Games ![]()
Shape Hunt:
Throughout the room hide enough small cut out shapes
for each child to have one.
When a child finds a shape have them come back
to the circle to identify.Shape Twister:
Get one large old white sheet.
Trace large shapes across the sheet in rows of
three across-three-down. Make each shape a different color.
Make a spinner to match the shapes.
Have children place parts of their body on the shape
according to what the spinner lands on.I Spy A Shape:
Place shapes throughout the room.
Each child gets a chance to find a shape.
Shape Cooking Activity ![]()
Shape Sandwiches:
Let kids make peanut butter and jelly sandwiches.
Then let them use different shape cookie cutters to
make small tea sandwiches.Shape Crackers:
Buy several different boxes of crackers in different shapes.
Let kids pick a shape, identify and spread on cream cheese.
