CHRISTMAS ACTVITIES
Sensory
Make scented red and green playdough.
Add scents such as peppermint and ginger to waterplay.
Icicles and snow if possible.
Pieces of fancy material like velvet, silk and satin.
Make red and green ice cubes and leave on a tray to melt.
Put many different spices in small plastic jar to smell.
Christmas Math
Place a box of beads (all colors) on a table with tongs.
Provide 2 bowls, one red and one green.
Sort all the red and green beads to matching bowls.
Collect two sets of identical Christmas cards.
Cut the covers off.
Cut one of each of the sets into puzzle pieces.
Use the matching card as a form to match the pieces on.
Sort Christmas cards by color, pictures, shapes, etc...
Christmas Group Games/ Field Trips
Find The Bell:
Have children stand in a circle.
Give one child a bell and tell everyone else to hide their eye's.
The child with the bell hides and begins to ring the bell.
Other children try to guess what part of the room they hear the bell ringing in.
Get as many volunteers as possible and go to a Christmas tree farm.
Let the children explore and find a tree.
If possible have one dug up and transplant to school area.
Go Christmas caroling through the school, local nursing home or neighborhood.
Have cookies and milk afterwards.
Christmas Science
Making Candles:
Making candles shows children how a substance
can change from solid to liquid.
Have kids put pieces of paraffin in a tin can
that is bent on top forming a spout.
Pieces of red and green crayon can be used to add color.
Place the bottom of the tin can in a pan of water
and heat on stove until melted. While adult does this
children prepare paper cups:
Tie a wick around a pencil and extend over cups.
Adult sloly pours melted wax into each cup.
After they have hardened children peel paper off.
Makes a good gift for anybody!
Dramatic Play
Toy Shop:
Provide many prompts such as small toys,
stuffed animals, boxes, tape, wrapping paper,
cash register, old checks, play money, purses,
wallets, ribbons and bows. Pretend to sell toys
and wrap at the wrapping center.
You can make a Santa suit out of a piece of red felt
children can tie around their necks. Make a red felt toy bag.
Buy a red hat at most dollar stores.
Arts & Crafts
Glitter Pine Cones:
Paint pines with glue. Sprinkle with glitter.
Paint paper with pine needles.
Dip cookie cutters in paint and stamp paper prints.
Make Christmas cards from small pieces of felt,
lace, glitter, glue, small pieces of gold and silver
wrapping paper, bright yarn, etc...
Rudolph:
Children trace one of their shoes for face shape.
Then trace both hands on paper for the antlers.
Cut out a small red circle for the nose.
Glue all the pieces together and draw eyes with marker.
Red and Green Chains:
Have kids cut strips of red and green paper.
Show to to link them and tape each link.
Paper Wreaths:
Get some green cup cake holders.
Cut a medium ring from poster board for each child.
Show them how to glue flat end down with ruffles up.
Use yarn to make bows.
Make playdough cookies by cutting out with cookie cutters.
Make early in the month let them dry out.
Christmas Cooking Activity
Egg Nog:
4 eggs
2 teaspoons vanilla
4 tablespoons honey
4 cups milk
Beat all ingredients together until light and foamy.
Pour into small cups and sprinkle with nutmeg.
I use our fresh eggs from home. Try to find fresh ones if possible.
Cream Cheese and Crackers:
Tint cream cheese with blue food coloring.
Have plastic knives so kids can spread on crackers.
Candy Canes:
Basic sugar dough
1/2 cup butter
1 cup sugar
1 egg
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
2 cups flour
1/2 teaspoon vanilla
Divide dough in half and add red food color to one and
green color to the other. Knead in until smooth.
Have kids roll small piece of each out into 3 inch strip.
Braid and place on greased baking pan. Bake 8 minutes
at 400 degrees.
