The 28 June 1864 William "Billy" Charles Marion Hopkins and his father George W. Hopkins joined Co. A. Roswell Battalion, Georgia Cavalry of the Confederate States of America. Billy was only 15. On July 22, 1864 in the Battle of Atlanta, near Decatur Georgia in a cavalry charge, Billy was shot in the forehead by the invading Yankees and he continued to fight. On December 31, 1863 Roswell Battalion merged wtih the 24th Alabama Cavalry Battalion Co. B, Co. A Georgia and later merged with the 53rd Alabama Cavalry Regiment, Partisan Rangers. All three cavalry units served in the Confederate States of America, Army of Tennessee under General Joseph Wheeler's Cavalry Corps. They were paroled May 8, 1965 in Augusta Georgia by orders from Col. Moses Wright Hannon. |
George W. Hopkins had two more sons that fought with the Co. H, 7th Regiment, Roswell Guards, Army of Northern Virginia, Confederate States of America, George T. Hopkins and Daniel D. Hopkins. They served from March 4, 1862 until April 23, 1865. Daniel D. Hopkins was with General Robert E. Lee when he surrendered at Appomattox Courthouse. George W. Hopkins and sons all lived in Roswell, Cobb County Georgia. |

Rebecca Jane Elizabeth Kelley's mother was Elizabeth Lewis 1819 - ? and her father was Philomon Kelley 1820 - ?. He was a 4th Corporal in Co. E. 40th, Georgia Regiment Volunteers Infantry of Army of Tennessee of the Confederate States of America. He was captured at Vicksburg, Mississippi July 4, 1863 and paroled July 6, 1863. He return to Gilmer County Georgia because of poor health and did not rejoin the Confederate Army. |
