Journal #4 by Patrick Roy
1. What was the major topic of this chapter?
The main idea of this chapter is how Mark teaches and calls us to be a disciple of Jesus Christ. Mark uses his gospel to preach to his gentile audience, and to us now, Jesus' message of discipleship and we are called to be a disciple and how we respond to his call determines how faithful we are to God. In this chapter the author breaks down the gospel of Mark and explains his techniques of writing along with many different explanations of Mark's writings. This chapter teaches us how to be a better disciple by explaining Mark's gospel to us and by allowing us to better understand his gospel. I want to remember that idea because I think that discipleship is one of the most important aspects of being a Christian.
2. Write about two major ideas you want to remember. Write a short paragraph on each clearly stating the idea and then telling why you want to remember it.
One thing I would like to remember is the three 'call narratives' in Marks Gospel. The three narratives are: Jesus Calls the First Disciples, Jesus Calls and Commissions the Twelve, and the Mission of the Twelve. All three describe how Jesus summoned others to hear and respond to the word and power of God. The first narrative is when Jesus recruits four ordinary people to help proclaim the message of the Kingdom of God. The second discusses how Jesus commissions his twelve on top of a mountain; he chooses his twelve. The thrid and final explains how Jesus calls his chosen and sends them on a journey. From the call narratives, we can learn about discipleship.
Another idea I would like to remember is the charecters in Mark's Gospel. There are those who are not good and do not follow Jesus, like the Jewish and Political authorities. Then here are those who are good at the beginging and then they turn away from Jesus in his time of need. And then finally there are those who are faithful all the time, through Jesus' good times and bad times. Which one are we? We need to remember this because we need to be like the ones who were faithful to Jesus throughout their entire life. We need to stay true to him and follow him throughout our entire life just as those who were faithful to him did.

4. One significant question you have fgrom this chapter. It can be intellectual or personal.
Were the apostles chosen by Jesus a random choice or was their reason?
