Wonder and Awe in Music |
I find wonder and awe in music all the time. The variety with which artists create music just astounds me. The multitude of sounds they blend together to create a unique harmony is utterly amazing. There seems to be no limit to what a musical artist can do. Just when I think I've heard everything, I come across something new that changes my perspective on the power of human creativeness and imagination.
Below are some songs that have really inspired, or stirred inside me, feelings of wonder and awe
"Elias"
by Dispatch
When one of my friends first showed me this song I was blown away by how well the band combined the African drumming with rock. The two parts complement each other very well and I just think that it is amazing how someone could combine two different styles so seamlessly. I also looked into the origins behind the song and learned that Dispatch was trying to promote awareness for the youth of Zimbabwe and this song was a part of it.

"God of Wonders"
by Cliff Young, Danielle Young, and Mac Powell
I always am amazed by how well the three singers in this song combine their voices to produce such harmony. There is an almost mystical feeling to the song as a whole. The rhythm of the song along with the lyrics and voices always evoke a feeling of wonder and awe in me.

"Tears in Heaven"
by Eric Clapton
When I first heard this song several years ago, I really enjoyed the slow, thoughtful rhythm and guitar playing. Then, last year, in Mr. Wehner's theology class, I learned about Clapton's inspiration behind the song: the tragedy of the death of his son. When listening to the song after that discovery, I was awestruck by Clapton's ability to channel his feelings into art. The slow, mournful lyrics of the song painted a picture of the grief Clapton was experiencing. I cannot listen to this song anymore without wondering how a man could transfer his emotion so well into musicial form.
