Names of God |
![]() |
Our
God is an awesome and "Mighty
God". He reigns from Heaven
above. The name of the only begotten
Son of God, Jesus, has authority and
power. As the praise songs relate to us,
he reigns with wisdom, power and love. His
Word reveals his love for us. Jesus
is "the Word", and there is
truly something about his precious name.
There
are six Hebrew words or names for God.
These words are Elohim, Jehovah, El, Eloah,
Elah and Tsur. These words all mean Deity,
Supreme Being, or Divine One.
Elohim
shows forth the relation of God to mankind as
the
Creator, and is in contrast with Jehovah, which
indicates Him in His covenant relationship with
the whole creation. Elohim is the plural
of Eloah, or Gods.
Jehovah
means the Self-existant or Eternal One;
Lord. This is used with another name,
Adonai, Lord. We see the words used as
Adonai-Jehovah, Lord God in Genesis, and in
other Old Testament Books.
El
means strength. El is the Strong and
Mighty One; the Almighty One; the most High God.
Eloah
is Deity, God, the Divine One and is used in
many places throughout the Old Testament.
It is used 56 times in Scripture.
Elah
or God, is found only in Ezra and in Daniel.
There is also the word "Tsur" which
means Rock or Refuge. This is found in
Isaiah 44:8.
In
the New Testament, we see one main word for
"God" in Greek, which is Theos.
This means Deity; the Supreme God. This
word is also used in various combinations.
An example is "Theopneustos", which
means "God breathed", and is used in 2
Tim. 3:16. All Scriptures were given by
God by inspiration of the Holy Spirit.
Kurios
is another Greek word used for God which is
usually translated Lord or Master. El-Elyon
and El-Shaddai are also other names used for our
Lord.
"I
Am" is the name God used when speaking to
Moses, which is the Self-Existant or
Eternal One, as shown.
Jesus
was God manifested in the flesh. He told
His disciples, "if you have seen me, you
have seen the Father". They
are in complete unity and all the fulness
of the triune Godhead is in Jesus.
In the beginning was the Word, and this Word was
made flesh and dwelt among men. The name
Jesus in Greek is "Yehoshua", a form
of the word or name Joshua. It means
Jehovah is salvation, or Saviour. He is
our light
in
this dark world. We are also to be a light
to others by showing forth Jesus and God's plan
of Salvation.
Matthew
1: 21 says "And she shall bring forth a
son, and thou shall call his name Jesus; for He
shall save his people from their sins".
The
name of Jesus is used 979 times in the New
Testament as the earthly name of God's
Son. As God, He was not called Jesus or
Christ, but his name was called Yehoshua,
"God who is Salvation'' in
Scriptures. Jesus is our salvation.
There is salvation in no other name but the
precious name of Jesus. He is Lord and God
of all.
Isaiah
9: 6 says: "For unto us a child is born,
unto us a son is given; and the government shall
be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be
called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God,
The everlasting Father, The Prince of
Peace. This prophesy was fulfilled with
the birth of our Savior. The governments
of the world shall be upon Him when he comes to
rule and reign eternally in power at the end of
this age in a divine theocracy restored to the
earth.
There
are many descriptions and names of our Lord and
Saviour, the only begotten son of Jehovah God
the Father through the power of the Holy Spirit. He is a God of
Love. "For God so loved the world
that He gave his only begotten son; that
whosoever believeth on him, should no perish,
but have everlasting life''. John 3:
16. No man hath greater love than our
Lord.
Jesus
is the sweet Rose of Sharon, the Bright and
Morning Star, our soon coming King. He is
our Great Intercessor, King of Kings and
Lord of Lords; our High Priest who is ever
interceding for his children. He is our
healer, our provider and a friend who sticketh
closer than a brother. Words cannot
adequately describe all Jesus is to us. He
is more than wonderful.
There
have been many idols and false gods in the
world, but only one True and Faithful God and
Lord of all. Jehovah is our healer
and our provider. He is called Jehovah-Jihreh,
Jehovah-Nissi, Jehovah-Saboath, and
Jehovah-Shalom in Scripture. He is our
peace and rest.
1
Corinthians 8, verses 6 and 7 shows us there is
one God, the Father of all, and one Lord Jesus
Christ, by whom are all things, and we by him.
Jesus
is truly Lord of all.
