Holy
Spirit
Devotional
We
are told 1 Cor. 2: 9-10, "Eye has not seen, nor ear
heard, nor has entered into the heart of man the things
which God has prepared for those who love Him. But
God has revealed them to us through His Spirit.
For the Spirit searches all things, yes, the deep things
of God".
When
we read these Scriptures prayerfully, Holy Spirit will
become very real unto us. We are told in 1
Cor. 2-12, "Now we have received, not the spirit of
the world, but the Spirit who is from God, that we might
know the things that have been freely given to us by
God. God freely gives us his Holy Spirit in
salvation. Without the Spirit of God, we do not
belong to Him.
The
Holy Spirit is referred to as the third person or
manifestation of the triune Godhead. He can be
grieved, has feelings, perceives, communicates and
responds to us. He is our Comforter, constant
Companion
and Helper. Jesus said when he went
away, He would send another who would abide with us
forever. The Holy Spirit has been sent
to abide with us forever, as Jesus promised.
Although
He desires to fill every person with his presence and
person, all will not receive Jesus as Christ their
Lord. He longs to be in fellowship with us and
bring us into the presence of Almighty God.
Jesus
did not speak of Holy Spirit as "it", but as
"He". In John 16: 13, Jesus said:
When He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide
you into all truth. The Greek word for
"spirit" is "pneuma". The word
"Holy" before Spirit shows us this is the
Spirit sent of the Living God.
In
the Old Testament, we see Holy Spirit had an active
teaching role which shows instruction given by Him
through God. Not only does He teach, but also
testifies of Jesus. He hears the things of God and
declares them to believers according to the book of
John. Just as the Father and Son are
divine, Holy Spirit is divine. In the great
Commission, we see Holy Spirit equally linked with
Father and Son. Peter also referred to the Holy
Spirit as "God" in Acts 5:4 when he spoke of
those who had not lied to men, but to God. The
Holy Spirit is divine, possessing all the attributes of
deity. We are also told the Holy Spirit is
Lord, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is
liberty. (2 Cor. 3: 17)
We
see The Holy Spirit as Omnipotent, as in creation and
the Resurrection. He is also eternal. There
is no fear of Him ever failing a Child of God. He is the
same yesterday, today and forever.
One
of my favorite words in the Bible is "The
Comforter", for The Holy Spirit. Jesus
said , "I will pray the Father, and He shall give
you another Comforter, that he may abide with you
forever". (John 14:16)
This
word "comforter" in Greek is "paraclete"
which means "one called alongside to
help". He is an advocate, defense
attorney, a helper who will fight all our battles and be
with us in the midst of every storm of life.
We cannot express in words or speech adequately what
Holy Spirit means to a true Christian.
Jesus
told Nicodemus, "Unless one is born of water and
"the Spirit", he cannot enter the Kingdom of
God". (John 3: 5) When we receive Jesus
as our Saviour, we receive the Holy Spirit of the Father
and the Son to abide with us forever.
There
is also a release of the Holy Spirit which was
prophesied in the Old Testament which would be as
"rivers of living water" flowing out from deep
within the heart. The Holy Spirit and Holy
Ghost are one and the same, and the different words are
just different titles given. We are to allow
Him to fill every part of our hearts, being sanctified
daily by the renewing of our minds by His work within.
When
we know not how to pray, Holy Spirit will make
intercession for us according to the will of the Father,
with groanings which cannot be uttered. Romans 8,
where this is found, is sometimes called the
Intercessor's handbook. It shows us a Christian's
walk in and with the Holy Spirit. It also
gives us a divine promise of all things working together
for good to them who are the called according to his
purpose. (Rom. 8-28)
It
is only through the Spirit of the Lord that a person is
able to "put on the new man which was created
according to God, in true righteousness and
holiness". (Eph. 4: 24) When
Jesus comes into a heart everything becomes new as He
takes over. He takes the heart of stone and gives
one a heart of flesh, according to His Word.
One
of the promises of Jesus is rest. We are to come
unto Him and He gives rest. Every place Holy
Spirit leads us and walks with us is in confidence and
quietness. He is our strength.
(Isa.
3: 15)
We
are to desire Jesus to be Lord and Master over all our
life. He will fill us and flow out of us as those
rivers of living water in Scriptures. One will
never be alone with The Blessed Holy Spirit residing
within their lives.
We
are to remember the words of our Lord in John 6:
63. "It is the Spirit who gives life; the
flesh profits nothing". The words Jesus
speaks unto us are spirit, and they are life.
If
you are weary and heavy laden today, Jesus has spoken to
you in His Word. Matt. 11:28-29 says:
"Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy
laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon
you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart:
and ye shall find rest unto your souls."
Verse 30 says: "For my yoke is easy, and my
burden is light".
Jesus
is calling today for those who will come unto Him and
give Him their heavy burdens in exchange for His
burden. He will truly give peace and rest.
