Jesus As The Greatest Of The Great In Matthew.

Matthew clearly brings out the uniqueness of Jesus. He is the son of David (1.1), and yet He is greater than David (22.41-45). He is greater than John the Baptiser (3.11, 14). He is greater than Jonah and Solomon (12.39-42). He is greater than Moses and Elijah (17.2-3). He is greater than all the prophets, for He is the only Son (21.34-37). And while men look back on such men with admiration and homage because of their huge importance, and may even expect some of them to come again and be involved in the world’s affairs, they look to Jesus for something higher, for they worship before Him (14.32; 28.17), and if they are His, they have the assurance that He is for ever present with them (10.40; 18.20; 28.20).

His greatness is brought out in that He can expound the meaning of the Torah on His own authority by declaring ‘I say to you’ (5.22, 28, 32, 34, 39, 44), and can take the ancient Passover ceremony, which was so sacred to the Jews, and give it a new meaning in terms of Himself. The enormity of this only a Jew can understand.

His greatness is also brought out by His clear indication that in end He will stand as witness against all who ‘on that Day’ in unfaithfulness call Him Lord (7.22-23; compare 25.31-46), and in that He recognises that in the Kingly Rule of Heaven to sit on His right hand and on His left is a unique gift of God (20.23). Indeed His testimony before the Father is what all men require (10.32-33).

His greatness comes out in that His Messiahship is to be the foundation of a new congregation of Israel (16.18), the old being replaced by the new (21.43). He is the new Vine in which all who would enter the Kingly Rule of Heaven must abide (John 15.1-6), the cornerstone on which all will be built (21.42).

His greatness comes out in that in His humanity He will come to the throne of God and take His seat at His right hand (26.64).

His greatness comes out in that all history will be summed up in Him, for in describing the final end of all things God disappears from sight as all concentration is on Jesus (24.30-31; 25.31-46). All is seen as under His control, including men’s eternal destinies.

He is great in that the Father Himself twice bore testimony to Him as His beloved Son (3.17; 17.5). He is great because no man knows the Son except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son and those to whom the Son chooses to reveal Him (11.24-25).
