Bio and martial arts background
Zhang Ziyi is originally not a martial artist. What gave her a great start in a movie carreer were her great looks. She was often chosen as one of the most beautiful women alive and was a famous model and spokesperson.
However, not being a martial artist, she is a great dancer since the age of 11 with athletic abilities. She became even better after attending the China Central Drama College, where she studied Dance. This helped her in becoming the star in various martial arts movies, some of which are legendary already. It is obvious that she incorporated her dancing skills in her fighting movies for television, thanks to the help of people like Yuen Woo-Ping with whom she worked for Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon.
She is also gaining popularity in the US. Her first US movie was Rush Hour 2. She didn't speak English at the time, so Jackie Chan, her co-star, was also her translator.
By now she is one of the most famous and beautiful Oriental actresses and already starred with the likes of Jackie Chan, Donnie Yen, Michelle Yeoh and Chow Yun Fat. |
