Bio and martial arts background
Stephen was the only boy in his family. He grew up as a fan of Bruce Lee. This inspired him to start his training in Wing Chun. His parents were unfortunately unable to keep paying his lessons, but Stephen continued his training by watching martial arts movies and practising for himself. In 1982, he graduated from High School and had his first auditions. A friend, Lee Chi Hung helped him, but he had no success yet. In 1983 he had his first luck, and become the host of a children's program 'Space Shuttle 430'.
However it wasn't his ultimate goal, it did give him some recognition and led to his start as an actor in movies. Very soon, Stephen would gain his first award for Best Supporting Actor. In 1990, Stephen turned out to be not only a good actor, but also to be a talented comedian. This would lead him into starring in 'All for the Winner', spoofing Chow-Yun Fat, with whom he'd work together later.
Stephen would work in more and more movies, and had lots of success in the comedy genre. He would also work more often as a director, writer, producer and sometimes action choreographer. Stephen would later be responsible for starring in and making two of the best and most successfull Oriental action comedies ever: Shaolin Soccer and Kung Fu Hustle, making him one of the greatest stars of Asia instantly. |
