Bio and martial arts background Gerry's interest in martial arts came at the age of 14. He started in Yoshukai Karate at the age of 18 under Mike Foster and Bob Bunning. Gerry would train there and gain a brown belt. In 1977 he'd move back home to Pensacola and train further under Hiroaki Toyama and Yuki Koda and gain his black belt. After that, Gerry began training in Kickboxing as well, which was getting more and more popular at that time. One year later, he would have his first matches and won them. Not very much later, he became the #1 contender in his weight class. In 1982, Gerry moved to California where he started a dojo in the Pacific Palissades and began training for the world title. One year later Gerry became the WKA Super Featherweight Champion and IKA Junior Lightweight Champion. In 1985, Gerry retired and still teaches at his dojo and is the West Coast Director of Yoshukai Karate and in 1999 gained the Ryu-Ken award, which recognizes the US Yoshukai Instructor of the Year. In the 90's, Gerry can be seen in some nice martial arts movies, with the like of Don 'The Dragon' Wilson. |
